There is no need for 75,000 hotel rooms during a regular season game -- or for that matter a playoff game. Lambeau Field seems to get along just fine in such scenarios. The only reason why the Super Bowl requires so many rooms is that it's become a week-long media extravaganza. Maybe the Super Bowl needs to be rethought. It's mainly a playground for the corporate elite nowadays anyway.

Brilliant post as always.

My home town of Vancouver BC just hosted the Winter Olympics.

There were Corporate Tents all over the place. They had propane heaters spread evenly under those tents.

Bring fricken tents and propane.

It will not be the Hilton at night, but it will be Lambeau in the day.

It is more remarkable to stay in a grass hut in Tahiti than it is to stay in a Marriott in Miami.

To me the Infrastructure is just an excuse. Given the chance, Green Bay, Appleton and the surrounding area would find a way to make it work. Would it be the same Super Bowl as NY would have. Hell no, but that is good. Why does everybody want things to be the same all the time. A Super Bowl in Green Bay would be a completely new and unique experience.

Hotel room are there. Door County would open the B&B, You can travel close to 1/3 the state in the same time it takes to commute in some of these cities. But everybody wants the same old cookie cutter crap event.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I will always believe that the Super Bowl venue should be awarded in the same way that the conference championship game venue (or for that matter, World Series or NBA Finals venues) are awarded. Let teams play for homefield advantage throughout, including the Super Bowl. And don't tell me it couldn't be done: other leagues have proven it can be done.

How do you get around the "need 25000 hotel rooms" requirement, though.

You and I think about the Super Bowl as a football championship game.

That isn't what defines it to the NFL. To the NFL it is a revenue source and a PR event.

The game. It's just the ultimate atmosphere for corporate event-hosting.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have a Super Bowl at Lambeau. I'd love to have a different kind of Super Bowl.

But it ain't going to happen.

Super Bowl siting is decided by suits. And suits don't take that kind of risk when they have one of the greatest cash cows ever.

Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s might have been a moment to change the business model for the Super Bowl. If the Super Bowl was General Motors today it might be possible to change the business model.

But change a business model that, from the point of view of the suits, has been an unprecedented success.

Not going to happen.

The Super Bowl is more likely to morph into something on the order of Rollerball or the Running Man before it relocates to towns like Green Bay. Dubai or Singapore have more chance of hosting a Super Bowl than Green Bay does.

Sorry.

Like I said, perhaps it's time to rethink the Super Bowl. Greg C. said that a regionally oriented Super Bowl would result in lost revenue. Perhaps. It's equally possible that allowing teams to play for the opportunity to host the game would bring a renewed excitement and enthusiasm for the game among fans, and it just might increase opportunities for real fans, as opposed to hand-picked corporate flunkies, to obtain seats for the game. Would it produce as much proximate revenue for the league? Perhaps not. But the goodwill garnered for the league among real fans would be immeasurable. As it currently stands, unless we climb the ladders of massive corporations, few of us will ever have a realistic chance to experience the game firsthand.

I agree, for football fans, those that love the game itself more than the hype surrounding it.. revamping the nonsense that goes along with the Superbowl would be embraced greatly.

It is a championship game.. not a spectacle.

But that was lost decades ago.. and because of the revenue cow it has become will never change.

Unfortunately, like most other things in life, like judging a person worth to some, is based on the cash.

Straight cash homey mentality dictates that the media circus and event type nature sets the Superbowl location.

Why else is it the only major sport not to place the championship game at the venues of the teams themselves.. because it is not about the game.. but the showcase it has become.

The original purpose was for neutral site and a level playing field.. but it has become nothing more than a revenue tool.. where more corporate money will flow. And Green Bay doesn't sell itself well for the major corps to send and dine their best clients or potential ones.

Granting that revenue is the primary purpose of the current Super Bowl format, why have the other leagues not followed a similar model?

Multiple game settings.. NBA, NFL, MLB.. American sports have a multiple game setting in the championship.. the NFL.. one game.

If they tried to copy it.. that would require a week or two of travel for the fans of the teams.. NFL.. one weekend. Logistics.

beast (8-Jan) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty

Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
