Former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the first overall pick in the 2007 draft and arguably the biggest bust in NFL history, continued his descent into oblivion on Monday with an arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

Daniela Werner of the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register reports that Russell was arrested in his home during an undercover investigation that resulted in the discovery of codeine syrup, which often is mixed with soda and called "purple drank" or "lean" or "sizzurp."

Booked at 4:22 p.m. ET, Russell has posted bail in the amount of $2,500. He's due in court on July 20.

Maybe he's simply trying to get the Bengals' attention.

He's an idiot to be sure, but why are we as a society so bent on keeping guys from putting into their bodies whatever they want? What's so terrible about trying to soothe the misery of a failed career with a little self-medication? What's so criminal about wanting to feel good?

I hope he wasn't stupid enough to deal drugs.

I love journalists use of any adjectives/verbs/nouns they feel like so people will read their story.

So lets get this straight - so cops go into JMR home and nab some pharmaceuticals so that means he has hit rock bottom? ...

lets see how many rich peeps out there that havnt done some pharmaceuticals ...

- I do agree that codeine syrup is not a good thing ... but again take what any journalist says with a grain of salt.
