Passing yards are a double edged sword. You want passing yards, yes. But I've always said passing TDs are way more important than yards. I'd much much rather have 40 TDs and 3500 yards than 30 TDs and 5000 yards.
In the history of the NFL, these are the top 10 seasons when it came to passing yards and the team result:
1 - 1984 Dan Marino with 5084 yards. Dolphins lose SB
2 - 2008 Drew Brees with 5069 yards. Saints go 8-8 and miss playoffs
3 - 2001 Kurt Warner with 4830 yards. Rams lose SB
4 - 2007 Tom Brady with 4806 yards. Pats lose SB
5 - 1981 Dan Fouts with 4802 yards. Chargers win the division and get knocked out first round of the Playoffs
6 - 2009 Matt Schaub with 4770 yards. Texans go 9-7 and miss playoffs
7 - 1986 Dan Marino with 4746 yards. Dolphins go 8-8 and miss playoffs
8 - 2004 Daunte Culpepper with 4717 yards. Vikings go 8-8 and miss playoffs
9 - 1980 Dan Fouts with 4715 yards. Chargers lose conference championship game
10 - 1991 Warren Moon with 4690 yards. Oilers get knocked out of the division round
You'd think at least one of the top 10 would win the SB. Nope. Not one.
Weird thing is almost the same for the top 10 passing TD throwers, all but Brett Favre in 1996 (6th highest with 39 TDs). Packers win the SB 35-21 over the Patriots.
