Love this pick (especially cause the Bears wanted him). I think the situation with Anthony Smith last season (and the subsequent attempt at re-signing) shows that the Packers want a much more versatile and, possibly more importantly, more reliabilie Strong Safety. Bigby's been hampered by an ankle injury that won't go away, and he has always had coverage issues. Heck even his "big hitter" status has taken a knock. Not that Bigby is useless, far from it, but we definately need more options at SS.

I don't doubt that Burnett will push Bigby hard for the starting spot. Perhaps Bigby's year experience in the 3-4 will give him the early edge, but I think Burnett will take the spot from him before long.

It's interesting so many people view Morgan Burnett as the antithesis to Atari Bigby on here.

I'm not too familiar with college prospects, so I like to read a lot of what scouts are saying.

Especially in McGinn's scout notebook on Burnett, the consensus seems to be he is Atari Bigby 2.0. Things all scout say is he takes bad angles, goes for the big hit too many times, and is liable to struggle covering one on one. These are all gripes many people have on here with Bigby, too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not as down on Bigby as many others are. I just thought it was interesting seeing two radically different views crop up. From a needs stand point, Burnett provides us with depth we DESPERATELY needed at Safety.

Yes but it cost us our 4th rounder as well to get him.

He takes bad angles in run support, not playing the ball. Iirc, what they were saying is that he comes up hard to make the big hit, but then the RB cuts back on him, and he grabs them and drags them down with arm tackles.
As far as Bigby, that ankle injury from two years ago has really effected him. After that season he came out and said it was "far worse than was reported." It's a shame. I hope he can shake that.

If this guy can keep Jarret Bush on special teams, he will be worth the pick.

A little more depth in the d-backfield is a huge plus.

Bigby's best attribute in his prime was is that he can lay some nasty hits. The biggest downside as pointed out is that he has had injuries the past couple years.

I am glad that we made this pick and have some more depth in the secondary but if we have to rely on Burnett this year to start, we are in trouble. DakotaT's link to the national football post has pointed out that he can miss some tackles and we all now how detrimental that can be. Ideally he will get some time to solidify his fundamentals to avoid this problem.

I like this pick:

1. Dreds (we are the team with the most long haired freaks and we must keep up the tradition).

2. We all saw what happens when one of our good safeties goes down and we try to replace them with some other peep not ready.

3. This guy is a ball hawk; not the best at run support but a ball hawk. And we know how int can lead to game changing wins.
it is said that a team with a +2 differential on the turnover ratio usually wins the game.

again weather he replaces bigby or not what we got is a guy whom can step in.

Dulak - I like your #3 a lot. As much as people love to make fun of Sharper, he has a place in the NFL. The Saints' D last year was in the bottom 50%, but when TSHTF, they always seemed to come up with a key takeaway. Takeaways turn games around.

#2 is very true too. We badly needed DB depth. Wish we addressed the CB position as well, but this guy's really needed.

From what I've read, I like this pick. Bonus for the hair.

haha ya ...

I see people complain about how we traded up for him. But suppose that all along we wanted a solid safety to add to our depth. Assume we wanted mays or this guy and mays was off the board.

ie mays was off the board before our 2nd round pick. And suppose TT's priority for this draft was to shore up our Oline with a solid pick or 2 and then improve our dline pass rush and then last but not least make sure we dont have a f$%^ up at safety again if by chance bigby or collins happens to go down (or maybe even someone to compete with bigby).

If all the above is the case then this would be a great pick and trading up is what was needed to be done.

zombie, I hear ya about the cb position ... was curious about that too especially since harris is questionable atm ...

So Dulak, do you think Ted Thompson might still address the CB position? Or is it because Mike McCarthy has faith in what we got (and assuming the doctors are telling Mike McCarthy that Harris will be 100% in 2010)?
