This has long been known about Martz.. he is a wide open offensive guy that shoulders a load on the offensive line and QB in his scheme.. not only in the infinite number of sets he runs but the fact that they get very little help in the protection.

Look at the tackles on the roster currently.. They have definite issues on the edges in protection.

Marten, James 72 T 6-8 310
Shaffer, Kevin 78 T 6-5 318
Williams, Chris 74 T 6-6 315

Then add the wafer thin toughness that Cutler brings to the table, this is a recipe for disaster in the brewing.

Angelo and Smith might have pulled out all the stops trying to save their collective asses this season, over valuing Peppers and hiring Martz, but I think by about mid-season Cutler will be in total meltdown, Smith and Angelo will be pointing fingers at each other and the Bears will be looking upwards at two teams.. and maybe all three.

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2010/04/03/insider-seahawks-made-good-gamble-on-whitehurst

"Mike Martz will not max-protect. He is going to ask his tackles to handle matchups solo one-on-one. The first question is: Do the Bears have the tackles to hold up isolated in single protection? The second question is: How is Jay Cutler going to react to Martz's offense? Trust me, there is going to be a guy open, but what Martz asks his quarterbacks to do is hold the ball, stay in the pocket and wait for receivers to run an 18-yard dig. That's 3-to-4 seconds to hit openings. Even if your line does not whiff, you might take one on the chin."

"The question with Martz's offense has always been this: Does he have the quarterback who will hang in tough and take shot after shot after shot? Kurt Warner did, but that made him shell-shocked. He was that way with the Giants. It was not until they max-protected in Arizona that he got it back. Marc Bulger is (nearly 33 years old) and done he did not want to get hit anymore. Jon Kitna would run through a wall all day in Detroit and just get the (crap) kicked out of him. He was tough as nails, and that's why Martz loved him. Alex Smith would not hang in the pocket, so they threw Shaun Hill in there, and before that it was J.T. O'Sullivan. With (Mike) Shanahan, Jay (Cutler) got rid of it fast. It was boom, boom, boom. With Martz, it is wait, wait, wait, bam get hit in the jaw. The most important player in Martz's offense is not the quarterback. It's the two offensive tackles."

I think Frank Omiyale will switch from guard to right tackle from what I've heard. They still could take Kyle Calloway in Round 3, who looks like he could start RT from day one.

But yes, I think and hope that the Bears will have trouble protecting Cutler.

Even if they do struggle they should be a lot better than last season. They added a big 6' 8" 345 lb lineman in the draft(Webb) and might find another in FA, stealing Chester Taylor from the Vikes was huge IMO, Their receivers will actually have NFL experience this time around and have built chemistry with Cutler(Knox and that Aromashadu guy look like they could be special players), Martz will be calling the plays and Ron Turner's same 5 plays are gone(bubble screens to a KR) and their O-line at the end of the 09 season looked vastly improved when their young tackle Williams was moved to his natural position on the left as evidence of Jared Allen getting blocked all night, which doesn't happen, in that excellent MNF shootout. I think this division is going to be strong from top(Packers/Vikings) to bottom(Lions/Bears) in a few seasons.

The only big problem I have is that I very much doubt that Martz's system is going to work with that O-line. To be honest, I saw a lot of potential in Aromashodu and Knox. I think that you might just be fine there.

That system asks for the O-line to hold their blocks quite long, though. And I know that you signed Manumaleuna to help out a little and that Chris Williams actually looked quite good, but I just don't see this system working right now.

Cutler is coming off a horrible year. Now put him in Martz's system with that O-line and, still, inexperienced WRs and he'll look shellshocked all season long. Move around more than he has to. Get happy feet. Throw ill-adviced balls before the route actually develops. Or just get the crap hit out of him.

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
