All I got to say is damn it.. now I have to watch out for that Aussie driver here in Wisconsin... heard they are accident prone. 😉

A-HA!

I think I found the connection between this Aussie guy and Ted.

I say it's

HIM

Look at the page about going to Australia. Look at the testimonials from NFL players...(Seems like Coach Zauner has worked with ALL of our punters in the past)

This is not a bad thing, if true...he coached the 2009 Ray Guy award winner from this year (who was unfortunately for us just a sophomore)

...That UGA kid---averaged almost 49 yards per punt this year...I forget his name.

Hey, Donnie Anderson was a leftie. 🙂

I think that this is a contract that we can wiggle ourselfs out of pretty easily. Or, at least, I hope so.

You have to think that a lot of work going in to getting this guy ready to actually kick in games. He's as raw as they come. With a bit of luck, we got ourselfs a steal who's already signed to a cheap 3 year deal. With a bit of bad luck, we'll have to pay him very little even if we let him go. That man had no leverage at all.

Personally I would have preferred the Packers take a look at Anthony Rocca, Sav Rocca's brother.

Me too, I think he'll be the next Aussie to have success in the NFL.

I don't have much faith in Bryan to make a big impact in our punting game. The other aussies in the AFL have both had pretty good careers in the AFL before signing with NFL teams at the end of their AFL career. Bryan appears to have been released by a number of clubs and then decided to try NFL as a result. I'm not a big AFL fan by any means, but I have never heard of him, whereas Graham and Rocca we're pretty well known here in Australia

However, it's good to get some competition in and I hope I am proved wrong! It would be awesome to see another Aussie have success in the NFL!

Anyway on to Bryan, he was delisted last year by Collingwood after a very average career. The thing I remember about him (didn't play for my team) is that he was more of a small ruckman, which is normally the tallest player in the team who contests the ruck contest, where the ball is either bounced up or thrown in, and his job is to tap the ball down to a speedy, midfielder. The ruckman is also normally the player who's the worst kick on the team.
(emphasis dfosterf)

He may have played other positions, I don't really remember, I think he was a tall defender (again, not the best kicks).

Anyway the thing about the three other ex-AFL punters is that they were all goalscoring forwards. Lead out, take a mark, walk back and kick the ball through the goals. Big strong guys with tremendous kicking abilities.

Chris Bryan, in my humble opinion, is nowhere close to those three in natural kicking ability. He may adapt better to the different ball, but even on the video he looks slow, and I doubt he could kick it as far as the others.

I don't have high hopes for him, I would have preferred Rocca's younger brother Anthony who recently retired, but we shall see.

I agree that Bryan wasnt a very food AFL footballer but some of this is incorrect, Bryan actually spent a lot of time up forward while he wasnt in the ruck. I dont ever remember seeing him play as a defender. He has got a good kick, much better than the average ruckman and can kick it a long way; he even handled the kicking out duties on some occasions (a job given to one of the best kickers on the team).

He is 197cm tall, which is about 6 feet, 5 inches, which is about the average size for a ruckman in the AFL.

If you watch this video from 1:37 onwards, you can see him kicking out, he is kicking well over 50 meters (54 yards) and that last kick is around 60 meters (65 yards). However this is under no pressure, not like when he will be punting with 10 big men coming at him.

I would have also liked to see us sign Anthony Rocca or even Nick Davis, who is another former AFL player trying to break into the NFL.

EDIT: Just talked to one of my friends over MSN who supports Carlton, who had this to say:

hes a bloody good kicker, but nothing more.
He was the last "woof" at carlton cos he could kick it a mile.
but he was average at football.

I must admit I don't understand these bullshit multiyear contracts these long-shot prospects sign. After all, everyone knows they're essentially meaningless. I know the Packers gave Tyrell Sutton a multiyear contract last year and he didn't make the final roster. Why don't they just offer them some sort of camp deal, and if they actually pan out, ink the longer-term contract?

Because if they catch lighting in a bottle... then by signing a three year deal they still have the player in a restricted free agent status with some leverage to extend them on a franchise biased contract, with at least a offseason/season to extend them into their unrestricted years.

Yet they can bail on the player if they don't make it... the player inks the deal for his shot. Most of the UDFA or obscure street FA are players with little options or they are picking the "best" fit in their eyes... so they are willing to give up some leverage to get on a roster.

There is a reason.. it is called money.
