Draft gurus: In your opinions is there anyone worth trading up for? Say - hypothetically - the Packers were to package some picks and Kampman, and - again, hypothetically - that's enough to get them near the top, is there a player that's worth it? Granted, it's a far-fetched scenario.

From the research I've been doing lately, it looks like there are a couple real studs @ safety (Berry and Mays), either of whom I would love, but I'm not seeing an OT worth it, save for perhaps Okung. There are other good-to-great kids available, but not in positions where the Packers have a need.

The team seems like it's just a couple pieces away from being scary, but I'm not getting a sense that this year's draft has much that's worth being overly aggressive to get.

Your takes?

I don't think any other OT than Okung is someone who they should trade up for. There's good value in the bottom of the first. And I think OT is the only positions they should be looking at in round 1.

I'd love Okung or Berry. Problem is, for both you'd have to make a huge trade upwards.

We'd most likely have to get to pick 3-5. We'd need to give up something like our 1st, our 2nd our 4th and our 1st next year. That's a hefty price to pay for whatever player.

You will get something, though. Berry is the BPA available on a lot of boards and gets compared with Ed Reed a lot. He takes some weak angles and isn't that strong just yet, but there aren't a lot of negatives on the kid apart from those. For someone who plays the pass like he does, he's quite a tackler, as well.

If there's anyone worth trading up for, it's him.

Personally, I think that we should just stick with the pick we have in the 1st round, if either Charles Brown, Bryan Bulaga and/or Jerry Hughes is still on the board. Maybe jump up a spot or two if just one of those guys is left.

I'm beginning to like the sound of Jerry Hughes more and more. With Kampman likely being gone next season, we definitely need someone to be opposoite Clay Matthews. Yes, Brad Jones has done well filling in, but I don't think he his starting material at this point in his career. I think that Jones would be a great rotational player.

But I don't think we would really have to trade up that far for him.

There are names like Russel Okung, Eric Berry, or even CJ Spiller who could really contribute to this team. But I think that it would be safe to take a Brian Bulaga or Jerry Hughes whenever it is that we pick.

I would love to see hughes in green and gold too, but I dont think he will still be on the board whenever the pack are up.

Lol. There'd be one heft price to pay for that guy. I can't possibly see him fall further down than the Lions.

They think that Jeff Backus is a Pro Bowl caliber tackle, so they won't be drafting Okung, most likely. Safety isn't as big a need as DT by far, so Berry is most likely out. And lastly, you have Schwartz leading the Lions. His defenses in Tennessee have usually been build from the D-line back.

As to Hughes, he should go right in front of us or right after we've picked, if we're not taking him. That, of course, is without his combine stats.

An interesting pick would be ILB. I don't know if our ILBs are not getting the scheme or are just too slow, but we could very well use someone who can guard the middle a bit more. Someone who can drop back a little and play the pass. Maybe Chillar is that guy, maybe he's not. They didn't plug him in in a tampa 2 like way against the Cards, anyway.

Not so sure if there's an "ILB" guy that could fall to us, and not be a reach. Rolando McClain will be taken somewhere from 10-20, and the next best ILB guy would be... probably Brandon Spikes, a late 1st-early 2nd prospect. Just gotta hope we can get our hands on Charles Brown, Bryan Bulaga or Joseph Barksdale. All look like solid LT guys, who could probably start from day 1.

That was why I was thinking someone who doesn't play the run very well, but does great in coverage. A complete LB will be a 1st rounder. If you want a guy like that, you could get him in the later rounds of the draft.

I don't think I'd hate Bulaga - Brown is a bit of a reach, maybe. I've seen a few mocks that have Mays falling past the Packers' pick; I think he's gotten an unfair grade thus far this year, as the rest of the USC defense this year was down overall. I see him as a bigger Nick Collins, if reports of his speed are to be believed, so IMO he'd be a really useful addition to the D. The knocks on him are all things that a good coach like Perry can teach out of him, and with that size and speed (plus a definite taste for nasty hits) he could be an answer to the issues they had in the middle of the field. Of course, if he plays well in the Senior Bowl and his combine numbers bear the myths out, I can't imagine he'll make it out of the top 15 - but if he's there when they pick, he's my guy.

A lot of mocks I've seen have us going with Gabe Carimi  later on - in one case that's in addition to Bulaga in the first. I like him - not as a LT, but on the right side - he and Sitton could grade out the right side of the field nicely, I think, and that would allow them to move Lang to LT, or if they come up with a better solution @ LT, they could finally kick Colledge to the curb and put Lang @ LG.

So assuming the (wildly unrealistic, IMO) Bulaga/Carimi draft occurred, you could see: Bulaga(Cliffy), Lang, Wells/Spitz, Sitton, Carimi(Tausch). Not sure if Cliffy would take a pay cut to stay around and help with the transition, but I bet Tausch would. Either way, you have to think they could run the ball with a line like that.

Sorry, that was all over the place - if Mays somehow falls, I think he's got to be the combo of BPA and need in the first. Otherwise, I agree with the Bulaga pick. I'd love to see Carimi picked later on, regardless of what the first round pick is.
