We all love how the Pack are rolling and things are ticking along nicely.
But Bowen seems to think head coaches need to oversee all three phases of the football team instead of getting bogged down in just one area.

I'm not saying I want Mike McCarthy to quit calling plays but I can see the sense behind this argument in some situations.

Thoughts?

I was very strong in my opinion, just as I was with the Bears Love Smith, about NFL head coaches taking on the role of coordinator. From my perspective, head coaches need to take on the role of overseeing the entire team at the NFL level. They cant stay in one meeting room and on one side of the practice field. Instead, they need to focus on all aspects of the team: offense, defense and special teams.

I don't necessarily agree or disagree with either side of the argument per se. I have no problem with a HC acting as coordinator if he successfully delegates more responsibility for the other two phases to his assistants.

I disagree. I think the only reason our defense has improved is because he let Dom have a lot of control.

Yeah, when you got a guy like Dom Capers on the other side of the ball, you really don't need to stand over him..

We just scored more points this season than any other team in Packers history. I am just fine with Mike McCarthy calling the plays.

For me... This post is very ironic.

Just this morning I was working with a Ford Dealership.

It was a basic management/sales development workshop.

One of the questions from the owner was how to get the most out of the assistant managers who he felt were not helping the sales people as much as they could.

I asked him about the T.O. (Turn Over) procedure... They have.

(This means that when a sales person can not close, he will then Turn The Customer over to a assistant manager.) Pass him off if you will.

Well they were not doing that. The sales manager was taking all of the T.O.'s and it turns out that they were losing sales, because he could not spread himself out enough, give enough attention to each potential sale on the busy weekends.

The manager may have had little confidence in his assistant managers, I do not know.

The only thing I could suggest to the Owner was what Booker T. Washington believed, and what I believe as well.

"Few Things Help An Individual More Than To Place Responsibility Upon Him And To Let Then Know You Have Complete Confidence And Trust In Them."

I will find out in 90 days if this dealership will bring me back again to work with them, once the numbers are crunched, and my suggestions which they took are evaluated by results.

I reckon I am stating here.. That Mike McCarthy is right as rain to assign and delegate responsibility.

I like his Management style.

Certainly seems like a less than brilliant move to me.

McCarthy not only runs the offense it's HIS offense. He know the players and he knows what schemes will work when and your going to spread him thin and give the controls for one of the best offenses consistantly at the top statistic wise to someone else?

For what? What is he going to do in a defensive team meeting to make them better?

Coaches come up through the ranks having specialized in one area either defensively or offensively. That's how it works. From what I can see we have the best scenario with an offensive mind in McCarthy and a guy like Capers you can hand the defense over to.

The amount of consideration the Packers should give this thought is 0.

Completely depends.

Lovie Smith is a perfect example of the Peter Principle. He was a damn good DC, one of the best in the NFL in the past 20 years. No, no exaggeration. He was that good. He has NO business being a HC.

Had he been the DC for da Bears in '05, I guarantee you they win that SB. The problem was he controlled the other side, something he has no business doing. I swear to God, I could have won that game had I been HC and simply pulled Wrecks and let my OC call the plays and have Lovie do his magic with the D. It's called "executive decisions" while you let the people under you do their jobs to the best of their abilities. RP explained that well with the car dealership example.
Mike McCarthy called great plays in '07. I loved him in '07 and called him an ELITE HC. In '08, he got too soft. Same with '09, but he finally started toughening up later on in the season.

I want to see us aggressive again, and pound our opponents until the fat lady officially sings. I do NOT want to see us go soft once we have a lead. I don't want to see us rushing 3 people when the opposing team can still win the game.

These are executive decisions Mike McCarthy needs to make.

As big as a critic as I was earlier in the year, I'm starting to like Mike McCarthy again because he's reverting to the '07 Mike McCarthy instead of that moron '08 MM. So no, I don't want to see him give up control, as long as he's more that '07 Mike McCarthy that punishes oppoenents and doesn't let up until they're knocked out.

One thing I hate seeing the Packers do is to have our opponents bloody and on the ropes, but let them come back into the fight. Knock 'em out. Finish them.

When Mike McCarthy stays aggressive, he's as good as any OC in the NFL so delegating more responsibility actually would be bad for us.

I like having the coaching and GM duties separated, as the Packers do, but I don't see it as an issue when a head coach also calls the plays on offense or defense. In fact, I would expect that is the norm for most successful teams, although I'm not sure. If a coach can find the right people to call the plays on both sides of the ball, that is probably a good thing, but it doesn't always work out that way.
