Hell, I bet 90% of them wouldn't pay 500 dollars to spare my life if the situation arose somehow. I wish it didn't happen, it sucks, but it doesn't effect me in any way emotionally past that.

I split this post out because it really bothered me, specifically the perception. A lot of these guys are very nice and don't want to be taken advantage of. If they were confronted with the scenario "hey this guy is going to die unless we get 500 bucks for this treatment, can you help?" I just don't see any of them saying 'No'.
