I think we need to thank Lovie Smith for vaporizing nearly all his timeouts in one fells swoop with the timeout/ terrible challenge at the end of the game. It sure made running out the clock alot easier for us.

WGN's Dave Kaplan

Let's go to Sunday's loss to the arch rival Green Bay Packers. The Bears are trying to drive for the tying touchdown and Jay Cutler throws a pass to Greg Olsen which he grabs but does not control through the catch and it is ruled incomplete. Smith takes his first charged timeout of the 2nd half. After the timeout and just before the next play is run he decides to challenge the previous play. That means if the challenge is not successful the Bears will lose another timeout without one second running off of the clock.

Well, that is exactly what happened. The challenge lost, the drive stalled and the Bears never did score again losing to Green Bay 21-14. Who knows if they would have scored if they had an extra timeout. Common sense tells me no but you can't dispute the fact that they would have run their final drive differently if they would have had another timeout to work with.

Also, Lovie Smith told the media after the game that the reason they called the first timeout on that play was because they had "some things going on" that necessitated using it. Just what those "things" were he did not say but offensive coordinator Ron Turner said there was nothing going on that would have warranted using another timeout.

However, the Bears decision to call a timeout before throwing the red flag is up for debate.

"For the first timeout, things just weren't right and we needed to call a timeout to take care of some things," Smith said after the game. "That is separate.

"Without going into detail, I called it for the same reason you always use a timeout -- things weren't right, and we wanted to make sure we were in the best situation. Again, after that, it was two separate situations."

"We're shifting up our personnel, trying to get a call, and before you know it the play clock is down to twelve," Bears quarterback Jay Cutler explained. "It's happened to us a few times this year, so I had to burn one. It just happens. Anytime there's a big play, something down field, it's up for grabs like that. Guys are pushing and shoving getting off the pile, taking to the refs, and trying to figure out what happened. The clock is running during that time.

hehe nice one Cheesey ... ya preseason the cutler trade was the most talked about news ... and how great the bears would do with it. Now they are still out a bunch of draft picks (so we can pick em apart even more 😉

Thanks Dulak!
I REALLY thought Cutler was gonna do well. I'm actually surprised at how bad he looks. I'm surprised.....but HAPPY!
I can't help but wonder if Lovie's time is over in Chicago.
And if they DO can Lovie, i can't help but wonder who their next coach would be.........the Skipper, Mary Ann, Ginger, GILLIGAN!?!?!
(That was for the "old folks" here)

The article can say whatever but the truth is the Bears put two drives together all day and were damn lucky Woodson dropped one right in his hands on one at the goal line.

They had 30 minutes in the second half and couldn't put up a point while we were driving repeatedly only to miss a FG, or fumble after a reception, or, trying to throw it to ourselves twice.

The Bears were lucky to even be in this game but then again their games are always ugly. I can't remember the last time they won a well played game so complaining about when they took timeouts is about right.

Two drives all day and Bears fans everywhere are probably saying this one should have been a W. They are so far removed from what a well played game looks like it's rediculous.

That was the dumbest challenge in the history of challenges. Does Lovie not know the rules?

Thank you, Lovie! The only thing worse would be if he thought he had another challenge available when he didn't. Only a complete and utter moron would do th....oops, wait...nevermind! Thank you, Lovie!

packerfanoutwest (3m) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (49m) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (49m) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (49m) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (57m) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (58m) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (1h) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (2h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (2h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (3h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (3h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (3h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (3h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (3h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (3h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (3h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (3h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (3h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (3h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (3h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (3h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (3h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (3h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (4h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (4h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (4h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (4h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (4h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (4h) : Packers will get in
beast (4h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (4h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (4h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (6h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (7h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (7h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (8h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (17h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (17h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (21h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
