OLB Thompson not out of woods yet

By Pete Dougherty

Though the early indications look decent, Jeremy Thompson won't know for a couple of weeks whether his recent neck injury could end his NFL career.

The second-year pro and outside linebacker suffered an injury to a nerve in his neck last week in practice that caused numbness and burning in both arms. The incident was scary enough that he was taken from practice in an ambulance and required a night's stay in a hospital.

The Packers' medical staff has reviewed an MRI and X-ray of his neck and told him there was no damage to the bones, ligaments and tendons in his neck, which bodes well for continuing his career. However, he's scheduled to undergo another MRI and X-ray in about two weeks and also visit specialists in Charlotte and Chicago to see whether he sustained any long-term damage to the impinged nerve.

"Hopefully there are none," Thompson said of the risks of continuing playing. "Thats what Im going to find out, Im seeking some second opinions. If there is something lingering then I probably wont be able to play anymore, but if everything clears out fine then there wont be any more risk."

Thompson said most of the numbness and soreness in his neck and arms has subsided. He still has some stiffness in his neck but no appreciable ligament or tendon damage.

It would be such a shame if his career ended the same way as Terrence Murphy's. Hope the kid gets back to full strength fast.

Is he even on IR yet?

I don't believe that he's on IR yet, but with the Packers working out the LB w/ the weird name, I see him being put on there in the near future.

I really hope he can come back. I would hate for him to end his career like this.....it wasn't even in a game!

Yeah, having your career end from a practice injury would be a tough bullet to bite down on. I hope all goes well with him and that the second opinion comes out even more positive than the first.

F$%^ this makes me want to go work for the packers (chiropractor) ...
err they ever hear of one?

sometimes MDs dont know it all ...

ask justin harrell and his back ...

- you know how many people I see a day with those same symptoms? - granted its not from a trauma but thats what xrays, ct scans and MRIs are for.

Dulak - I see a chiropractor. Screw back doctors. They're quacks.

Next time someone says I'm nuts for seeing a chiropractor instead of a back doctor, I refer them to a man named Jerry Rice. Only was the best football player ever, holding the 2 most important records of all (most points, most yards). He swore by them and said they extended his career. I believe him.

So....

Hope Thompson considers the alternative. May save his career.

I agree with you both. In High School I woke up one night and I wasn't able to breathe. Turns out because of my bad posture (I'm 6'4 and every god damn chair doesn't even come halfway up my back) my spine was starting to curve the wrong way and two of my ribs were detaching from it, causing pressure on my lungs. It hurt like hell. The next day my mom took me to the chiropractor. It felt great. Now I visit one regularly for my back problems.

ya many NFL players think very highly of chiropractic treatment ie there was a video of I think a carlina RB recently that showed him at the chiro getting treatment (on NFL.com).

Glad to hear it has worked for you.

btw not all chiros are the same; some are wacked but some are great.

- I heard 'but maybe my memory is off' that favre went to where I went to school at and got treatment also. (tidbit)

If I had my wisconsin's chiropractic liscense I would send them my resume (ie tricky to get it).
-lol- just sent them a inquiring email about employing a chiropractor; well see what they say. Would be alot of hoop jumping involved for me thou.
And I would only go there if I would get a free Al Harris jersey 😉

What's the difference between a chiropractor and a "back doctor"? I've never heard of a back doctor.

This injury to Thompson sounds ominous. It seems like usually when the possibility is mentioned of a neck injury being career-ending, it is. I would hate to see that happen to him.

dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.
wpr (26-Jun) : 1st world owners/stockholders problems dfosterf.
Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (25-Jun) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy is on my ballot subject to me penciling him in as a no.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : I thought it used to be we voted for the whatever they called the 45, and then they voted for the seven, and then they voted for Mark Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
