I truly wonder how such a ranking has held in correlation with the Superbowl participants each year.

Does a truly explosive offense hold serve or does it require a sense of balance on a yearly basis?

And what impacts does it have on a defense over the course of a year when the offense attacks quickly, shifting the possession time back upon the defense?

I remain in my thinking that offensive balance holds more relevance combined with solid defensive play.

The Pack rocks in Fox-Tox

Posted: Dec. 2, 2009

One of the pro football statistics that has caught our fancy this season is the one former coach Brian Billick, now a Fox game analyst, has helped popularize.

Billick orders teams by a metric he calls "Fox-Tox Ranking," which combines explosive-play differential with turnover differential. An explosive play is one of 20 yards or more. Teams are then ordered from top to bottom in terms of the results from adding the two differentials.

Billick contends there is a correlation between teams that have high rankings in Fox-Tox and those that get into the playoffs.

Through Week 12 in the National Football League season, the Packers are ranked fourth in this category, with a Fox-Tox of 24. They have created 46 explosive plays but given up 39 for a net gain of seven.

By way of comparison, the San Diego Chargers are ranked just ahead of the Packers in Fox-Tox with 25. San Diego has created about the same number of explosive plays on offense as the Packers (45), but their defense has given up just 28, 11 fewer than the Packers.

However, what makes Green Bay special in this calculation is its turnover ratio, which is plus-17.

Here are the Fox-Tox leaders through Week 12:

1. Indianapolis 31

2. New Orleans 30

3. San Diego 25

4. Green Bay 24

5. Minnesota 22

6. Philadelphia 17

7. Dallas 15

8. New England 15

All eight of those teams are in the playoff hunt.

The division leaders not in the top eight in Fox-Tox are the 7-4 Arizona Cardinals and the 8-3 Cincinnati Bengals.

Every Team thet has been ranked in the top 4 after week 12 in fox tox has made it to their respective conference championship game.

JUST KIDDING, alright!

This is something new that may or may not mean anything I guess.

No offense but this is just another obvious stat. Teams that have bigger plays on offense win more games. Teams that produce more turnovers win more games. Teams that give up the ball lose more games. Teams that give up big plays lose more games. It's pretty damn obvious I don't understand why you have to make it into a statistic and say "OMG look this stat predicts who makes the playoffs."

This is just repackage stuff from grandpa's football.

Everyone for decades has known turnover ratio has a high correlation to wins (except Jay Cutler).

In a parity league one big play can make a huge difference.

Just like some of those old Single Wing plays are now called "Wild Cat", The same things known for over 60 years of football are now called Fox Tox.

Watch some pre World War II football films and some plays have never changed, just the names.

dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.
wpr (26-Jun) : 1st world owners/stockholders problems dfosterf.
Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (25-Jun) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy is on my ballot subject to me penciling him in as a no.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : I thought it used to be we voted for the whatever they called the 45, and then they voted for the seven, and then they voted for Mark Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
Zero2Cool (25-Jun) : Maybe wicked wind chill made it worse?
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : And then he signs with Cleveland in the offseason
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : @SharpFootball WR Diontae Johnson just admitted he refused to enter a game in 41° weather last year in Baltimore because he felt “ice cold”
Zero2Cool (24-Jun) : Yawn. Rodgers says he is "pretty sure" this be final season.
Zero2Cool (23-Jun) : PFT claims Packers are having extension talks with Zach Tom, Quay Walker.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jun) : GB-Minnesota 2004 Wild Card game popped up on my YouTube page....UGH
