Came from another forum with a Packer insider access

http://www.jsonline.com/packerinsider/70677192.html

Most fans wouldn't recognize how effective McCarthy's teams have been when it comes to ball security. When a team excels by eliminating mistakes, fans often forget about the alternative and assume that's the way it always is.

In this case, McCarthy's success is the byproduct of spending an inordinate amount of practice time, having a staff of assistant coaches hammering it home day after day and finding skill-position players who buy into what the head coach is selling.

"Everybody preaches taking care of the football, but it's like anything in the game of football . . . how important is it to you?" McCarthy said Friday. "It's something I've always believed in. We do ball security every single day. It's definitely shown up on Sundays."

The Packers are tied for second place in fewest interceptions with five and tied for third in fewest fumbles with three. They haven't lost a fumble in the last four games.

At its current rate of eight turnovers in nine games, Green Bay would finish with 14, breaking the club record of 19 set in 1972 during a 14-game schedule.

We're very good at this point. It's just that it gets overshadowed by the amount of penalties.

Let me put it like this. We don't turn the ball over. Our RBs and WRs hold on to it very well and Rodgers doesn't throw interceptions.

We do commit a holding penalty on just about every drive, though. When you start at 1st and 10, commit a foul or two, end up at 1st and 15/1st and 20 and then, on 4th and 10, Kapinos kicks one for a net gain of 30, we're still not getting very far. It's like a turnover, but you just don't call it that.

That said, I love how we're protecting the ball. It's a clich, but the team that turns the ball over the most, usually loses the game.

so here is a question being talked about...

Why is it the players can handle the teaching on how to hold onto their balls (LOL)

But can not get it through their head on how to stop penalties

Recently somebody in this form commented that Ryan Grant does not get enough credit for holding onto the ball, even though he gets a lot of carries and takes a lot of hits. That was a great point.

The Packers have indeed done very well in the ball security department this season, but the fact that they commit so many penalties leads me to believe that the ball security thing is mostly just luck. Why would they be so disciplined in this one aspect of the game and so undisciplined in another?

Doubly so when you consider how fumble prone Green tended to be.

That's cool and all, but I wouldn't be too pissed if they took some of that emphasis and put it on PROTECTING THE MF'ING QB.
What percentage of our fumbles have resulted from Rodgers getting hit by someone coming unblocked?

In spite of the 41 sacks, Rodgers only has 2 fumbles lost. There are 14 players in the league, including 9 QBs, who have more.
