I'm in a thread starting mood of late...don't worry, it won't last...

Okay, here's the deal. The "Wilde with Hawk" thread got me thinking. Football players are rarely thought of as "intellectual" and "artsy" types. Yeah, sometimes they get a rep for being "cerebral" or "smart" (see Steve Young and his effin law degree).

But the Hawk interview where he said "I'm boring" and raved about his Kindle got me thinking....what football players have there been that have been "out there" in the sense of being truly "intellectual" or even "artsy".

And that got me thinking of Mike Reid, former DL and sackmeister (double digit sacks for I think 3 years for the Bengals). So in honor of Reid, who Wikipedia tells me is now a country music songwriter of some repute, I'm asking for nominations for the All-Mike-Reid team.

My nominees just to get things started:
1. Mike Reid. Obviously he has to be on the team.
2. A J Hawk. Because he inspired the thread.
3. Bart Starr. Because I gotta believe he's a reader and because any all pro type list that doesn't have Bart on it isn't worth anything.

I don't know if this counts, but Charles Woodson, because he's an oenophile.

That's somewhat artsy and sophisticated, right?

Anyone who knows what oenophiles are is presumptively qualified to nominate. :)

So we have:

QB: Starr.
DB: Woodson.
DL: Reid
LB: Hawk*

(*asterisk because Hawk really doesn't have an on-field oeuvre yet to justify his place on team)

If you sucked down a bottle of Boone's Farm along with your 5th of scotch once...

Does that count?

The former TE of the Raiders, what was his name...the guy that did a running (I called it a diatribe) commentary on television...always waxing philosophical...help a brother out here, Wade.

He was "out there" by anyone's definition...

Calvin Hill was an intellectual. I don't think many knew that about him.

That is debatable, to a degree, (some circles) in that my qualifier would be that one of his frat brothers at Yale was none other than George W. Bush.

Thought I better throw that out there for informational purposes when making your deliberations, and my strong dislike for Yale grads has absolutely nothing to do with my providing you with this additional piece of trivia, lol lol lol.
