This was as embarrassing at it gets for the Green Bay Packers.

There was no excuse for their awful performance in a 38-28 loss against the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

It marks the low point of the Mike McCarthy coaching tenure in Green Bay and raises serious questions about where the Packers are heading.

Every loss is embarrassing, linebacker Nick Barnett said. For me, it doesnt matter what their record is. I think the most embarrassing thing for us is that we had this game won and we let them make a play.

Actually, no loss in the last four seasons under McCarthy was quite this bad, and a terrible Buccaneers team made not just one play, but several late in the game to stun the shell-shocked Packers.

Blowing an 11-point fourth-quarter lead against one of the worst teams in the NFL is bad enough, but the colossal collapse could ruin the Packers season.

The Buccaneers hadnt scored more than 21 points in a game all year, yet somehow found a way to outscore the Packers 21-0 in the final 11 minutes.

It was a meltdown at every level.

Youve got to have all three phases working: offense, defense and special teams, quarterback Aaron Rodgers said.

We found out in the fourth quarter how ugly things look when none of those phases is functioning properly.

The Packers special teams allowed an 83-yard kickoff return to set up one Tampa Bay touchdown.

Then, the Packers defense got into the act by allowing rookie quarterback Josh Freeman, in his first NFL start, to direct a 72-yard touchdown drive that gave the Buccaneers their first lead.

While all this was happening, the Packers offense shut it down for the afternoon by going nowhere on its final four possessions. The Packers allowed three sacks during that abysmal stretch, committed a holding penalty and a Rodgers pass was intercepted and returned 35 yards for a touchdown.

This is the kind of defeat that could destroy a teams confidence. No one in the locker room was willing to admit it, but even McCarthy acknowledged that could be an issue. Im sure they dont feel very confident right now, he said of his players.

Asked whether this was a low point for him, McCarthy replied: It doesnt feel good. It never feels good when you lose. This one definitely hurts. Itll definitely rank up in there, but its still one loss. Im not trying to downplay it. Im disappointed in the way we played today.

We have some recurring problems that we have not cleaned up yet. Thats definitely cause for concern as we move forward.

The Packers appear to need more than a mere housecleaning. Their problems have become so persistent and widespread that major remodeling might be in order. Some restless Packers fans are calling for demolishing the existing structure and rebuilding from scratch.

While that approach is too rash at midseason, the Packers performance over the final eight games takes on far greater long-term significance.

I hope we have the resolve and the leadership to get through something like this, Rodgers said.

It wont be easy for a team unable to impose its will on the lowly Buccaneers.

If the Packers dont recover, there will be many more embarrassing moments in the second half of the season against much tougher opponents.

The portion I have made stick out. I hope is TRUE! As I said a few days ago, this team is too confident for their own good. You are NOT the '78 Steelers, you can NOT simply roll your helmets out onto the field and walk away with a W.

I think this team is too cocky. I was far less bummed out by this weeks loss than any this season. Particularly because I am HOPING this knocks this cocky stubborn coaching staff in the ass to work harder, smarter, faster, and most importantly, more efficiently!

There's a difference between cockiness and confidence. Believing in your own abilities is good, thinking you're better than the man you need to beat is not. You consistently need to perform at a high level, and there is a mental aspect to that. Confidence brings consistency, cockiness brings laziness and penalties.

And there are a lot of players on this team that consistently do their job. In fact, I think the worst thing that could happen here is Rodgers losing his confidence. If this year has to be a stepping stone towards next year's playoff run with much better play, so be it. But I've been very worried about Rodger's confidence, technique/decision making under pressure, and health ever since the O-Line imploded.

If losing his confidence makes him start getting rid of the ball and stop trying to go deep on every play, I'm all for it.

beast (3h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (3h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (13h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (13h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (15h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (16h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (17h) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (17h) : Thank you
wpr (17h) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (17h) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (17h) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (17h) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (17h) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (18h) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (18h) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (18h) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (18h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (18h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : what's so funny?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
