I agree about sacks being way more damaging than penalties. I'm not surprised to see the stats backing that up. The penalties that bother me the most are the O-line penalties, because they are also responsible for most of the sacks.

I would've expected the stats to show that special teams penalties are somewhat damaging. This lack of correlation may explain why teams commit so many penalties on special teams. If you get away with a marginal block, let alone a blatant violation, you could get a TD out of it, but if you get flagged it costs you 10 yards.

Not to sound like a jerk or something. But of course a sack is more damaging. It is just common sense. It is a loss of yards and down. A penalty is usually just a lost of yards.

This is close to saying an INT is more damaging than and incomplete. Or allowing a TD is more damaging than allowing a FG.

That was pretty much the point I'm trying to make. It's still damaging. Cancer is worse than a urinary tract infection, but it'd be advisable to avoid both at all costs.

I think the point I wanted to emphasize is the zero correlation between defensive/special teams penalties and success.

And yes, I think it is obvious that sacks impact the game more than penalties.

Can we take that one step further and say that there is no correlation between starting field position and success? Special teams penalties greatly affect starting field position, and I would say that there's a big correlation between starting field position and success on both sides of the ball.

Yes sacks are more damaging. That doesnt mean that penalties, dont matter

Dont tell me that the holding penalty on Tony Moll on 2nd and 7 against Houston last year that put us out of FG range when we were driving for the winning FG, didnt matter.

Dont tell me that the bone headed personal foul on Poppinga last year against the Titans that led to a FG didnt matter. (We lost by 3)

Dont tell me that the false start on the last play of the game against the Bengals this year didnt matter. I can go on and on and on

Nobody is saying they don't matter. It's that as a whole the teams that rank high in defensive/special teams penalties don't lose games just because of them. Those penalties are not a cause for consistent losing.

Getting sacked and offensive penalties do correlate to more losses. It's a correlation that has been shown when looking at NFL seasons from 2002-2006.

Good article. Thus the Packer Oline shuffle. I don't think he wrote anything the bosses on the team didn't know but I think it adds fuel to the fodder that our Oline is in need of work.

It seems that our oline offers the double whammy as it is penalty AND sack prone...

I await the time when Rodgers gets the time to throw... Hopefully right soon!

I agree. The problem is poor Oline play generally. Clean that up and you'll have fewer sacks AND fewer penalties.

They do tend to be deflating and ruinous of offensive rhythm. You get that "here we go again" feeling.
