The goal is to field the best overall football team possible and not have the best SS in the NFL. Bigby upgrades this team and that's going to make things better for the defense. He played solid against Detroit, but it's not like he was challenged at all. The game against Minnesota will be a huge test for him.

I believe Capers is more confident to bring the blitz with Bigby in the game NOT because of what happens if they don't get to the QB but what happens if they RUN the ball.
Bigby is very solid coming up on the run and making plays at the line of scrimmage on run plays. I think Capers was worried about getting caught in blitz packages and not having the hitter and aggressive player Bigby is back there when they get caught blitzing and the offense is running the ball.
I think guys like Bigby and Palamalou or however you spell his name is why Pittsburgh is not afraid to bring it on any play. Good tacklers who can move up and cover an area absent of a LB because they blitzed. If you watch, many of Capers blitzes have one LB lead and another right behind. While those blitzing can take care of the area they are in there is another area WIDE OPEN for a runner to make a big play if you don't have a good, aggressive DB to cover that place on the field.

Point is you dont want to lose any starter, and while bigbys impact is clearly felt when he is on the field I think that is more a lack of depth at the safety position than the great play of one Atari Bigby.

That's exactly the point that gopackgo made in his initial post.

The Packers have been a bit unlucky to suffer injuries to starters at two of the three positions where they could least afford it: left tackle and safety (QB is the other one). They have decent backups at all other positions: Raji at DL, Chillar and Bishop at ILB, Poppinga at OLB, Tramon Williams at CB, Wells at C, Spitz at G, Giacomini at RT (not much worse than Barbre, anyway), Finley/Lee at TE, Jones and Nelson at WR, Jackson at RB, and Hall/Kuhn/Johnson at FB.

Unlucky? I think not! We went into the season knowing full well our primary players at those positions were injury prone at best. A number of us on this board were clamoring for those positions to be shored up in the offseason -- frankly, for both Bigby and Clifton to be cut. That we had injury problems in those very positions should come as a surprise to no one, least of all our management and coaching staff.

Unlucky? No. Getting what they deserved is more like it.

Cutting Bigby would have been a terrible mistake

I put the over/under at 3 games before Bigby's back on the injury list.

Anyway, I'm done bitching for the day. I'm clearly in the minority on this issue and I'm fine with it.

Availability over talent any day. That's what Thompson and McCarthy told us. But lately they don't practice what they preach.

Huge difference maker in my opinion. Bigby is not a Pro Bowl player but is sure a hell of a lot better than whoever is replacing him.

He's only played in the Bears and Lions game and so far, I've only seen him when he's making good plays. No Al Harris yelling at him, no blown coverage. This guy has been hurt too often the past couple of seasons.

He might be a top 5 player of importance for the Packers to stay healthy just for the sheer drop-off in talent after him.

The importance of Atari Bigby? Well answer me this name one starter you can say it would be ok to lose. Lee doesnt count as Finley is essentially a starter
And lets not start some ted bashing session over this question. I am sure you ask any team this question and you will get the same answer.

I have been screaming this for since bigby went down that woody should have been moved to safety and let Williams start.

We could lose Barnett, Chillar, Clifton, Grant... dunno. The dropoff is huge after Bigby.

Favre was eating Derrick Martin alive. Martin was out of position and unreliable. That's why Capers couldn't blitz.
