When stretching ended inside The Don Hutson Center on Monday morning, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy did something unusual.

Instead of proceeding directly to practice, McCarthy called his entire team to midfield, told players to take a knee and spoke for several minutes about the importance of getting their post-bye week preparations off to the right start.

It says a lot, receiver Greg Jennings said. He definitely needs us to pull it together, period.

This is what the Packers are through four games: an average football team thats done just about as much wrong as theyve done right.

They rank 14th in total offense, 18th in defense. Theyre second in turnover margin (plus-seven) but 30th in sacks (five) and dead last in sacks allowed (20).

Theyve dropped too many passes (14) and missed too many tackles. Theyve taken too many penalties (30).

Most important, theyre 2-2 after last weeks 30-23 loss at Minnesota.

We had a pretty bad taste in our mouth still from that loss, nose tackle Ryan Pickett said. Nobodys happy where were at right now. Nobody. Were 2-2, man. Thats not good. We have too much talent to be 2-2. Too many people care to be 2-2.

But thats what the Packers are 2-2, average entering a three-game stretch in which theyll wrap their home NFC North Division slate, with games Sunday against Detroit and Nov. 1 against Minnesota sandwiched around a visit to Cleveland.

Mondays roughly 90-minute practice was the Packers only on-field work in an eight-day span, as McCarthy decided to forgo a Wednesday practice last week to maximize rest following the night game and today is another scheduled off day.

McCarthy said his message to players was twofold: Clean up the mistakes and get ready for a battle with the Lions, who are 1-4 but have been competitive in their past four games.

I definitely think were ready to take it to the next level, Jennings said. The biggest thing is, we havent come nearly close to playing to our potential. In four games, each game, we havent come near it. Thats something that we can set up there and reach for.

But at the same time, we realize there are some things we have to get corrected or were going to continue this trend. Win one, lose one, win one, lose one, win when youre supposed to win, and when you should win who knows that cant happen.

That both defeats came against current division leaders 5-0 Minnesota and surprising 4-1 Cincinnati, which also has upset Pittsburgh and Baltimore during its four-game winning streak is of little consolation, given the volume of errors the Packers made in each game.

Theres no shortage of challenging games left on the schedule either, with matchups against Dallas (3-2), San Francisco (3-2), Baltimore (3-2), Chicago (3-1) and Pittsburgh (3-2) looming in the second half.

Cincinnatis playing great, but we still feel like it shouldnt even come down to that, running back Ryan Grant said. The loss to Minnesota, we beat ourselves. Had two opportunities, basically in the red zone, two turnovers, and then to get stuffed on fourth down three opportunities for points, and we (got none). Hats off to (the Vikings), because they did what they need to do to win the game. But we feel like were not far from taking that game.

We feel like we are closer. Weve just got to do it.

They are right there. The Bears, Bengals and Vikings have all played well this season. As for the Rams, well...

I think an early bye week was a blessing to the defense. The have a small amount experience playing under Dom Capers which will hopefully develop greatly during these two weeks.

I don't mind the average start. It seems to have lit a fire under our guys, at least through the press.

But I think this sentence says it all

Theyve dropped too many passes (14) and missed too many tackles. Theyve taken too many penalties (30).

Keep working on fundamentals. This team has the potential, once they play a few games where they realize that potential, it will go a long way. Confidence is key in any sport, and the Packers may be able to get it through Detroit and Cleveland, culminating in the second Viking game.

No drastic changes need to be made. Packers need to keep improving on fundamentals and execute each week.

Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
