If Chad Clifton can't play - and McCarthy said Clifton will "definitely" need the week to prove he's fit - rookie T.J. Lang would almost certainly get the start. Colledge's time there appears to be over.

"They just told me today that depending on how Chad was going to do, I was going to play left tackle," Lang said. "Chad's still kind of taking it easy a little bit. I think all depends on how Chad's doing. I think he's making progress, but basically they are filling me in there for now and we'll see what happens as the week goes on."

I think this boils down to a number of things...

-Spitz being better at C than LG.
-Colledge being better at LG than LT.
-Wells being thrown around like Gary Coleman at C.

Putting Lang at LT causes much less of a shakeup along the line, i'm definately in favor of the move. This also means that unless TJ Lang does see action at LT and lights the world on fire, LT becomes an even bigger need than we thought it would be. Charles Brown FTW!

This put a big smile on my face. Could we actually be sticking with a solid OL set up?

I thought for being "thrown into the fire", Lang looked good against Allen. He completely blew his most important assignment(JA) on the play in which Allen sacked A-Rod, but other than that, I can see that "nastiness" in his game. We'll see how it goes though.

Excellent, excellent. Lang played really well given his inexperience. I'm pretty hopeful that guy can do well. This is great news.

Good call if it happens. He will either show he can or cannot play, and we will know what we have. Kid seems to have some good fundamentals for T. A nice drop step, gets good distance with control. While he was in, it actually looked like the help from RB hurt more than it helped.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Hmm, I like the call given it strengthens our line as a whole but we have to be careful about going to the left side.

ya I also thought he didnt do too bad at LT. Although if I remember right he was setting up as RT during camp etc ... and meredith was setting up at LT (but hes gone now) so ...

i totally agree...barbre is improving game by game and sitton is doing good...everyone knows that spitz is an upgrade than wells on C and colledge is a good LG...so lang deserves the call and if he can block or he has some trouble we can help him with a TE

This is what we should have done to begin with.

I feel much better about this approach this week. Lang got a shot to show he could at least attempt to play at a starter level, and we will be rewarded. Whether or not Lang even gets a start the entire season. Discussed so heavily this offseason was the switchup in the interior of the line to make us more physical, and glad we are back to that core again. I also want Lang to stay as the backup at LT, unless Cliffy is unavailable, get him to play at a consistent level from one position. Build that muscle memory from one side of the ball and go with it. If Tauscher is the better option on the right, then Barbre stays as the backup over there, or vice-versa. Either way, I see our line having a much better chance overall.
