At times I like Thompsons lack of saying things, but when it comes to being asked why he traded someone or let someone go. His reply? "I dont know, we were just, i think, looking for more constituency at that position".

Seriously, you don't know? And you THINK you were looking for X improvement?

Ted's lack of explanations and lack of movement in the free agent market makes one think that perhaps Ted is terrible when it comes to evaluating his own talent.

He reminds of the fantasy football owner who has selected a whole team of his personal favorite players. He thinks ALL of his players are worth far more than what they really are and because of this he can't make any trades to shore up the areas were he is weakest. The FF owner just assumes that things will get better if he does nothing at all.

When Ted looks at these street free agents he thinks the players he already has under contract are better (and sometimes they are.) So he does nothing. And surprisingly nothing changes. The team is still weak in certain areas and all the hoping and wishing that things turn around on their own lead to no improvement at all.

Sums it up well.. some here have been barking this for a while...

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20091011/PKR07/91011036/1058/PKR01

I think (Thompson) does a great job, I think hes done a great job with the draft and all that, said a scout whose teams of responsibility include the Packers. But you have to have some balance to your program. If he just had a little balance in that program, the skys the limit with what he has surrounding it.

Balance doesnt mean jumping into the big-time free-agent market, where the prices can be ridiculous. Thompson never has stuck his toe in those waters and probably never will. But it does mean signing more of the Brandon Chillars of the world to go with his usual bargain-basement moves.

For instance, going into this season, the Packers felt OK about their tackles. But with a new, young starter on the right side, and a beat-up veteran on the critical left side, there were risks, and the backup plans were inadequate for a contending team if things went wrong.

Sure enough, things went wrong. Right tackle Allen Barbre, though improving, hasnt been ready for prime time. Left tackle Chad Clifton, at 33 a health risk coming off arthroscopic surgeries on both shoulders and knees, got hurt.

So one quarter of the way through the season, the 2-2 Packers biggest problem is their offensive line. With Barbre suffering more than his share of defeats while growing on the job, and guard Daryn Colledge forced to replace the Clifton the last 2 games, the Packers run game has been mediocre and their pass protection little short of a disaster.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been sacked 20 times and is on pace for 80, which would be the second-most allowed in a season in NFL history.

Yes, Rodgers has held the ball too long several times, but the bigger problem is the line. Thompson is admitting his high level of concern with his impending signing of right tackle Mark Tauscher, who hasnt played football since blowing out his knee last Dec. 7.

I have a lot of respect for how (Thompson) is trying to build something, the scout said. But my god, theyre so damn close. Youve wasted two years trying to build an offensive line when you could have signed somebody off the street.

Thompsons thinking now that hes rebuilt his roster is clear: use the draft to develop backups and competition for as many positions as possible. But that didnt work, at least not on the offensive line.

TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Looks like we signed Clayton Tune as QB3

TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : As a Canadian and a follower of Canadian University football. I am rooting for him

dfosterf (27-Aug) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Schefter must have deleted his tweet
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (27-Aug) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (27-Aug) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (27-Aug) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
