I was saying this all through the preseason, so I'll say it here now that the statistics back me up:

Leading the league in interceptions is a symptom of a BAD defense, not a good one. And look where we're at -- number 2 in the league. In that category alone. In every other category, we're near the bottom.

A defense that must rely upon turnovers to stay in the game is like a batter who always swings for the fences. You might lead the league in home runs, but you're also going to lead the league in strikeouts. Consistent base hits are far more valuable to a team than occasional homeruns.

I can't agree with this totally. We did not do a good job of pressuring the QB Monday Night and that also contributed to 0 interceptions. While our sack totals might not be great the defense had done a good job of harrassing the opposing QB, i.e., Cutler in the Bears game. MORE than the sacks it was the pressure that caused him to make bad throws.

You can also directly connect turnovers with aggressiveness. Mathews made a very aggressive and great play on the strip, however, a lack of aggressiveness in the game plan for the front seven resulted in 0 mistakes by the QB. It also kept our offense off the field way to often with all of the 3rd down conversions they made.

For me, the more INT's the better. It means the front seven is doing their job and the DB's are where they are supposed to be. I don't think you can ask for more than that.

I believe the whole purpose and the strength of the 3-4 is about getting turnovers. An aggressive D like that will get burned once in awhile but the big plays the defense can make is what it's designed to do.

If we would have gone after Favre and put him on his butt once in awhile I am sure he probably would have manufactured a big play here and there but I think we would have won the game.

If a lot of interceptions that give a high powered offense another crack at 3 or 7 points is a BAD defense ... give me a bad defense then.

Anytime you get your offense on the field from a turn over .. that's a good thing. Seriously, it is.

Not sure that leading in INTs can point to a bad defense necessarily. Good defenses also have lots of INTs. last years top 10.

Baltimore,Cleveland,Chicago,Packers,Bucs,Steelers,Titans,Dolphins,Giants,Raiders.

While all of these are not good, many of them are very good. Crappy secondary play and are going to get few INTs. Good secondary, more INTs.

I got to say I dont agree

take the chicago game for example ... how many picks did we get? ... and what did out whole D look like that game?
We wooped major butt. I said this all last season; pressure on the QB will get us Even More i-n-t-s

You might say ... well the game was still so close; well thats the offense and a totally different ball game then our D.

Ill take our D when we played chicago any day.

For the past couple of years with this team, it seems like if it's not one thing, it's something else. Last week we couldn't stop the run, this week we could, but couldn't stop the pass. The team really never seems to put it all together in all phases of the game, and I just can't understand why.

Having more interceptions = a bad defense. I disagree highly especially since most of the time our defense does intercept the ball they leave us in very good field position. Anything to get our offense more opportunities to score is okay in my book.

I'll take the interceptions any day.

Our pass defense has shown what most any teams pass defenses show. IF WE GET PRESSURE they are fine. Better than fine actually. I mean we all saw what a lack of pressure will do to a defense last year. We lived it for 16 games.

That will not be the case this year. Capers simply errored when he determined that the game plan would both create pressure on Favre and stop Peterson. I don't think it will happen again. I thought it was great that the best player (Woodson) basically called him out on this. Statements like he made will get your attention.

I think you guys are missing my point. I'm not saying getting interceptions is a bad thing. I'm saying that needing to rely upon interceptions to get off the field is a bad thing. If our defense is controlling the line of scrimmage and getting off the field after third down, by all means, go for interceptions. But that's not happening in this case. Our defense is 2nd in interceptions because that's the only way they can find their way off the field.

I don't mind if my batter swings for the fence for strike one and even strike two. But he damn well be trying to get on base with his next swing. I don't mind if our defensive backs hawk the ball on first and second down, but if they're not sealing the line on third down (and they're not -- their third down percentage is appalling), then who cares if once or twice a game they come up with the glitzy interception?

I wouldn't go as far as NSD. I would say, however, that a high number of turnovers (and INTs in particular) can be the sign of a mediocre defense.

The preseason got us hoping that Capers had the magic touch of turning a bad defense into a good one overnight. He's improved the defense, but it's still mediocre. The turnovers hide the fact that there are substantial weaknesses (some personnel, some likely inexperience) in all three units on D.

Right now the defense has one absolute stud (Woodson), three players tending to play above average (Jenkins, Pickett, Harris, though not against Minnesota), and other guys playing average on their good days. That to me is the definition of a mediocre/average defense. Not a bad one, not a good one, just, well, there.

I still am hopeful -- because I still think it's a question of taking time to learn the new system. I don't see Collins and Kampman and Raji as average in ability. Just haven't mastered thenew system yet.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
