Packers looking to add a safety

by Tom Silverstein

The most likely candidate to be added is former Indianapolis veteran Matt Giordano, a four-year pro who started six of 55 games for the Colts before being released on Sept. 6. Giordano, a fourth-round pick in 2005 out of the University of California, was cut when the Colts claimed linebacker Cody Glenn on waivers and needed a roster spot.

Also working out for the Packers Tuesday were cornerback / safety DeAndre Wright, formerly of the New York Giants, and safety Nate Ness, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks, according to two NFL sources. Neither of the other two have played in a regular-season game, which makes Giordano the most attractive because of his experience.

Small name players, but this Giordano sounds decent for a 2nd stringer. Was beginning to play a bigger role in the Colts' defense, untill they waved him.

Obviously, he's no threat to Bigby, but I guess that he should be better than having Bush or Martin out there, starting on defense.

Should've kept Anthony Smith...

What a surprise.

Wow, didn't take this one long at all to come to fruition. I've yet to hear a decent argument explaining why Smith was cut. Bush was better on special teams or something, but I still don't buy it.

Should have kept Smith. I really don't think there is any way around that fact. Dammit.

Q: Boy, I sure am glad that the Packers cut safety Anthony Smith. Not only did he outplay Atari Bigby, he was able to actually stay on the field. Bigby is one of those guys that the team keeps trying to throw at the top of the depth chart even though he cant stay healthy. Wow, what a bad move to cut Smith.

Vandermause: Smith made his share of plays during training camp, but he also missed his share of assignments. And when the Packers had the chance to acquire safety Derrick Martin from Baltimore, they took it. This is not so much a discussion of Bigby vs. Smith as it is Martin vs. Smith. Martin is a better overall player, particularly factoring in special teams. I would agree Bigby cant stay healthy and thats a concern, but having Martin on the roster gives the Packers a safety net.

So why in the hell are we working out safeties if this guy is a safety net?

If they truly felt this way.. we still have three healthy players that can play safety..

Bush
Rouse
Martin..

Safety net my ass.. it (cutting Smith) was a mistake and the Packers know it.

I agree - smith was a big hitter and I remember the packers talking about his hits and his ability in the 3-4 at the steelers way back when they grabbed him.

To be honest Id rather they cut one of our fullbacks instead of smith (even thou I like all our fullbacks).

Jarrett Bush is a penalty machine.

Ya know.. I figured that the Packers would learn from last season about making a last second move on the roster.

Last year the Frost addition.. I hope Martin isn't a repeat of such a mistake.

Cutting a player of known value for a perceived one.

Good point.

This counts for less than nothing, but I have a much better feeling about Martin contrasted with that Frost move.

Smith was not a mistake to be cut. And the Packers are working out potential Safeties because that's the smart thing to do.

Bush? Seriously? You're going to sit there and try to BS by saying Smith being cut was a mistake and then say we have Bush? Yea not happening, it's early, but not that early to pass that one by me.

To agree with your Smith being cut was a mistake. I'll say if someone was to be cut, it should have been Bush, not Smith. If that's the mistake you're talking about. I'd say right on.

I still can't believe how so many are so high on Anthony Smith who is a freaking BACKUP on the RAMS just because he made a handful of plays in PRESEASON against BACKUPS!

I must have missed something and that's very likely. If everyone says it's true, and I don't, the odds are not in my favor. I'm going to stick with what the staff has said and what others who watched him practice have said instead of believing in the pre season rarity of splendid play making against backups.

And more to why we are working players out. Collins, injury. Bigby, Injury. Rouse, Injury. We often hear injury after any one of those names. It would be inefficient not to be working players out to support the cast.

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
