Not once, even after penalties, did the Packers send the same players at Cutler on back-to-back plays. That's on 40 drop-backs, which includes infractions and tosses out one pass against a goal-line defense.

On those 40 opportunities for pressure, the Packers brought 35 combinations of players.

Only three combinations were used more than once, on a total of eight plays.

The most players Capers brought at Cutler at any one time - not including those playing man-to-man on running backs or tight ends at the line of scrimmage - was five, on 12 occasions. That's 30% of the plays. The Packers hope to bring pressure on 40% of drop-backs in the near future.

That is pretty impressive, I love the creativity that he is bringing to this defense. I am giddy to see how we perform the rest of the season. If the defense plays this well and the O-line improves I think we are in for a hell of a ride this year. God I love football.

The good folks over at the PPO wanted to know what was so special about Capers... here is their answer if they really wanted to know.

A student of the game.. very proficient at playing the game with in the game on defense.. I loved watching the complexity of the defense Sunday.. something I haven't had the pleasure of doing since the days of Fritz to be honest.

Bates was buried in the principles of keeping it simple, just outperforming the opposition. That is a fine strategy if you have the talent to make it go..

Fritz didn't run as many varied looks, but he was constantly adjusting the defense to take away the hammer of the offense. whatever was working the day.

It made me smile to see the defense on Sunday..

Hmmm, my math skills are a little weak, so maybe somebody can do the work for me. With 11 starters, and say 10 substitutes. What is the possible number of player combinations that can be used.

This is just incredible really. I was surprised by the way the Pack was substituting the LBers. All except Bishop got major time in the game, and McCarthy has commented that he wants to make sure he gets more.

Add in Raji back this week and that number of option is going to jump. Variety is the spice of defense.

Fritz's shining moment was that playoff game against the 9ers! That "D" was molesting the receivers of the 49ers ALL day! It was a sight to behold...R.I.P. big guy!

The other side effect of the player recycling during the game was poor play-by-play announcing. I think the announcers will continue to struggle with keeping it straight who's on the field. Announcers better bring their A game when they are working a Packers game. 😛

I agree, I love what he is doing. We definitely had the personnel for a good defense we just needed someone creative to call the shots.

It's a bit more complicated than you'd might think.

Firstly you need to establish what positions the substitutes play.

Let's start with an easy example:

3 starters on a team, each person has a backup.

Let a denote the first person, b denote the second, c denote the third, d = a's backup, e = b's backup, f = c's backup.

So we could have starters from a pool of abc, abf, aec, dbc, dec, dbf, aef, def = 8 possibilities.

This is a pool of 6 in total number where we choose three 3 starters from a binomial. Hence 2^3 = 8.

For 20 players, e.g. 10 positions with 2 players each, from a pool of 20 selections, we get 2^10 = 1024 (the lone starter always remains a starter and hence doesn't affect the number of combinations).

Since you can blitz any number of people, for a given starting 11, you can blitz from 1 up to 11 people. This is the sum of 11C1 + 11C2 ... up to 11C11 = 2047 blitzing combinations per starting 11. Since there are 1024 possible starting 11s, 1024 * 2047 = 2,096,128 possible blitzing combinations.
