Best thing for him is is that he'll play OLB in a 3-4. He doesn't need to cover a whole lot (Like Evad stated). A little more than Kampman, yes, but he'll be blitzing and playing the run a lot. At both, he seemed to have improved big time. (Looking at articles, tweets, etc.).

I still don't think that he'll be a lot more than average, which is a real let down, as I thought that Thompson was really beginning to get good. I just hope that he has made leaps in this new scheme or that Matthews/Thompson will take over at ROLB somewhere this season. Although Thompson might be even more of a liability in coverage. Both won't do a whole lot more than shallow zones, I recon, anyway.

I suspect you are right, as well. I think it works out alright, though. Guys like Demarcus Ware and Shawn Merriman aren't asked to do a lot in coverage either, and they're hugely successful in the 3-4. And when they do drop into coverage it's not uncommon for their to be some sort of screwy safety blitz or zone blitz to supplement them. The advantage of the scheme is that pressure is fairly constant but comes from different angles and different positions.

Yeah, I just compared Matthews/Thompson to Ware/Merriman. 🙂
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.
