I refuse.

Sacha Cohen is either a genius, or the masses are just ignorant. Same as Borat, only ripping on homophobes. Not impressed.

Well I think your assumption is off-base -- that Cohen "only" rips on "homophobes."

That's not at all the case (I'd know -- ahem, I watched the movie). It's totally your prerogative to watch or not watch a movie, so don't get the wrong idea. But so you know "homophobes" aren't the only victims to his [admittedly] offensive and scathing comedy.

I was reading what I wrote, and I couldn't understand why I said that... until I realized I was comparing Borat with Bruno.

What I was attempting to get across was that Bruno was pretty much the same movie as Borat, only with more homophope-bashing.

The following is a quote from someone on another forum I'm on. I couldn't say it better.

This is a bit of a 'preview' more than review. Or maybe just a rant that needs to be elsewhere, though it certainly involves what I've SEEN as previews, reviews and promotion for the latest Cohen 'masterpiece'.

I will admit, SBC is maybe a borderline genius: He's managed to weld a career and make big bucks out of not only getting away with being offensive as all hell, but by making it so that people are hit with major peer pressure to not call him out on it. He does this by claiming there's some kind of message to his movies, about the absurdity of racism or in this latest case, homophobia. Therefore obviously people who don't appreciate them as such are humorless, oversensitive gits.

He's dredged up old vaudeville blackface routines basically, and then slapped onto them that he's doing it for society's good or to 'make people think'. While it's possible a minor percentage of people may in fact think during or after his movies, I don't seem to have seen all that much evidence that thinking was a wide-spread phenomena after Borat, and I doubt it will be after Bruno either. (I heard hundreds of people on college campus and around town quoting lines from Borat incessently. However none of these people were doing it with any trace of irony. In some cases it was of course merely the equivalent of nerds doing lines from Monty Python or the like. In other cases it seemed to be an actual reflection OF these peoples' intolerance and racism, where you know, talkin' like some stupid foreigner is a good way of making your real self look better/smarter/civilized.)

So yeah. Bruno. Cohen cherrypicks victims out of groups he believes will already be the most hostile to gays. He then acts like the most overblown and dangerous stereotype gay there is... he absolutely *caters* to their worst fears of what gays are like, after leading them into a situation via misrepresentation. He harrasses them off and on camera until they get angry, and then it's "OH LOOK! HAHAHAHA! HOMOPHOBICS GOTTA BE HATIN'! WHAT DORKS!". Meanwhile, he does absolutely nothing to apparently make Bruno any kind of... you know... redeeming character that one can/should empathize with. I found in some scenes I saw in the trailers that I felt a WHOLE lot sorrier for... the 'homophobes'. Like, hey, that black talk show audience where he says that he traded an iPod for an African orphan and named him the "traditional name" O.J.

...Obviously they must have merely been homophobic to have boo'd and not found that funny. Or they were racist. Or something.

Hell I'm not even fond of turning victimization into humor right off the bat. Extremely dangerous or psyche-hitting practical jokes are Not My Thing. An entire movie that consists of NOTHING but this, where real people- whether or not they're as homophobic as folks would claim- become partially the butts of jokes so that they can then go into their real lives and be harrassed for it, is not my idea of what the entertainment industry as a whole should be doing. I say partially the butts of the jokes, because in truth, Bruno himself remains the big butt of the jokes as well. I've seen reviews where the way he is so "mincingly feminine" and "obnoxiously flaming" are considered to be most of why "the movie is so funny". So.. it's not just the reactions of the homophobes. People are having a blast laughing at a 'gay guy'.

I'd suggest that people who are homophobic, unless they have a really analytical mind and good sense of irony will in fact, find that it's a film about how ****ed up gay people are. As opposed to how bad their reactions/feelings are.

...Which makes me worry about what might happen in theaters when these folks, who are going to make fun of the queers find themselves, you know, sitting next to a gay/lesbian couple who went because they thought it was supposed to be a film about how stupid homophobes are.

I'm boycotting the damn thing, and I am kind of calling for anyone else I know to do it as well.

And I'd like to suggest that those who when Cohen's latest movie is called a derailment of what it was meant to be, and nothing more than toilet humor and offensive stereotypes have the words leave their mouths that "you just aren't smart enough to get it" "you're just too easily offended" or "you have NO sense of humor" ponder for a moment on just how tolerant and empathic towards others this movie and its star have helped make them.

Thanks for the response, Formo.

I've talked to some of my former college professors about SBC's style of humor (or high-minded offensive/ironic shock therapy, as I'd like to call it).

The post you provided is, from a particular point of view, spot on. But here's what I'd offer as an amendment to neintales' position: he is absolutely right in arguing most people don't "get" the point of the movie (which I'd absolutely argue there IS). Many people find the offensive stuff funny simply because it's offensive -- not because its ironic.

If I could wave a magic wand I'd make it such that only likeminded people could watch his movie. I mean, I get the point of the movie (that racism/homophobia, generally intolerant views, etc. are RIDICULOUS) but I also concede that that point may not reveal itself to many people who watch the movie.

It's a slippery slope. I really enjoy the movies but it's largely due to the fact that I completely buy the premise. And, again, the premise isn't for everyone.

Pretty much.

I'm in a weird category. I've been called a fag, and I've been called a homophobe. I disagree with homosexuality, and when asked, I state my opinions. On the other hand, I've been known to say/do certain stuff to imply to co-workers that my sexuality is.. questionable. And I get called a queer buy the guy that's all for same-sex marriage.

I spose that could be Sacha-like of me. I don't know. I just don't like the stereotypes that fly around about those that oppose same-sex marriage.

When i see my nephews, i give them hugs and kisses. And they do to me, too. (oh....and they are in their late 30's) I've had people say things about that, too. I'm not "gay" at all. (I don't know why they use the word "gay", anyway. Very few homosexuals I have known were ever "happy".)

What i wonder is this........why is it ok for people to be intolerant of intolerant people? Arn't they then doing the SAME thing they are ticked off at?
They have "gay pride" parades......but try to have a "straight pride" one and see who will really be "intolerant".
Or how about the kid that wears the "Proud to be black" T-shirt. He gets a pat on the back. Let ME try a "Proud to be white" shirt and see how quickly i would be called a racist.
Once i went to Madison, where a "pro-choice" rally (i like how they say "pro choice", when in fact they are "pro abortion") If they were TRUELY pro choice, they wouldn't get ticked off when anti abortionists state their case, right? I didn't even SAY anything, wasn't carrying a sign that said WHICH side i was on, and a "pro choice" female (sure wasn't a "lady") tried to jump down on me from a 6 foot high retaining wall. She was a little skinny thing......and she screamed how she wanted to kill me......took 3 full grown men to hold her down. Please, tell me. HOW did she know what side i was on? My own feeling was that her "master" told her. The things she called me would make a sailor blush.
Yeah.........."intolerance" will not be tolerated!!!

Yes, Cheesey. There are kooks everywhere -- they have political ideas from all sides (republican, democrat, Wiccan). That doesn't prove anything.

And I really don't wish to engage you in a political discussion, because ultimately we won't agree. And that's fine. But I can tell you this: those sad gay people you've known, well they might just be sad because they've had to live with, at times, vicious prejudice. This isn't rocket science. If you wanna chalk it up to sadness that comes from moral depravity -- which I'm not suggesting you are -- then I, of course, wholeheartedly disagree. I think the writing is on the wall.

Just take that into consideration.

Oh, and I've known many affable, fun-loving, on-the-surface (which is as far as I can go) gay people in my life. Not the least of which is my girlfriend's brother. Happy young man, indeed.

IDave, i don't think politics has anything to do with it at all. I'm sure there are gay dems and reps.
I was referring to the intolerance from thos that scream the loudest about OTHERS being intolerant. It's like, "We will get along fine, as long as you allow my views to squash your views". That comes from the so called "gay" side as well.
If someone wants to be homosexual, thats their choice and i won't stop them. But don't try to force ME to say it's okee dokey. I beleiev in the Bible's view of it. I won't judge the people that do that kind of stuff, I'm not THE judge. But i won't ignore my own convictions just to be "PC".
I don't hate them for what they do. I hate the sin, not the sinner.
It's a slipperry slope. Every thing that gets considered as "normal" that isn't, will just keep doing lower down the slope.
I remember when being a drunk was frowned upon. Now, it's "he's sick! He's an alcoholic".
It's NOT an illness, it's a choice to be a drug addict or alcoholic. EVERYONE could be an addict of some sort. In the end, YOU make the CHOICE to what you do. Is it easier form some with an "addictive personality" to become an addict? Yes. But you do NOT have to give into your addiction. I'm not saying it's easy, but it can be done if you REALLY want to.
That goes for ANY kind of addiction. I was a teen drunk. Got BLASTED every night. This was after my Dad died, and i went off the deep end. Once i started drinking for the night, i didn't stop till i passed out. That went on for a few years. I stopped drinking ANY alcohol for 20 years, because if i had ONE, i wouldn't stop till i was blasted. I COULDN'T stop. So i went cold turkey. You think that wasn't hard? But now, i can have ONE or TWO drinks at the most, and quit. It no longer is my master. Could i become that drunk again? You bet! Let my guard down, give into it, and i could be right back. But i will NOT allow that to happen. It's my CHOICE.
