Unfortunately, I can't find any easily accessible information as to the makeup of the NFL West, so I'll start with the NFL Central.

The original NFL Central, organized in 1967, consisted of all four current members of the NFC North: Packers, Vikings, Lions, Bears. The division was renamed the NFC Central following the merger in 1970, with the Buccaneers joining the division in 1977. The Buccaneers subsequently were reassigned to the NFC South in the 2002 realignment.

Current and former members of the NFL/NFC Central/North have appeared in a total of 18 NFC Championship games, going 8-10 (.444). They have appeared in 11 Super Bowls, going 5-11 (.455).

Another way of putting it is that members of the Packers' division have appeared in 46.2% of NFC Championship Games, winning 20.5% of them; and have appeared in 25.6% of the Super Bowls, winning 11.6%.

At first glance, it sounds like the NFC North has been well represented in the Super Bowl, until you pause to consider the fact that the Cowboys have appeared in 8 and the Steelers in 7. The Steelers alone have over half as many rings as the entire NFC North division combined. This division also features one of the only five active teams who've never appeared in a Super Bowl.

Even so, although people deride the division as weak, it would seem that the division has done well by itself.

Just got my 2009 Sports Illustrated Almanac, time to put it to use.

1933 - The NFL West started and consisted of the Chicago Bears, Portsmouth Spartans, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cardinals. Teams: Bears, Spartans, Packers, Reds, Cardinals

1934 - The Detroit Lions and St. Louis Gunners were added to the NFL West as the Portsmouth Spartans disappeared from the league. Teams: Lions, Gunners, Bears, Packers, Reds, Cardinals

1935 - The NFL West lost both the St. Louis Gunners and Cincinnati Reds. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Cardinals

1937 - The NFL West added the Cleveland Rams. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Cardinals, Rams

1943 - The NFL West lost the Cleveland Rams. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Cardinals

1944 - The NFL West has an interesting season adding the Chicago/Pittsburgh Cardinals/Steelers (the two teams merged) and the Cleveland Rams. Obviously there was a move of the franchise to Pittsburgh. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, Steelers/Cardinals

1946 - The Rams move to Los Angeles from Cleveland and the Cardinals are back in Chicago. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, Cardinals

1950 - The NFL West expands and adds the New York Yanks, San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Colts. The Cardinals are transferred to the East. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, Yanks, 49ers, Colts

1951 - Baltimore Colts disappear from the NFL West as the two leagues (East and West) are respectively named to American (East) and National (West). Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, Yanks, 49ers

1952 - National league loses the New York Yanks for the Dallas Texans. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, 49ers, Texans

1953 - The Texans are gone replaced by the Baltimore Colts. The leagues are switched back to East and West from American and National. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, 49ers, Colts

1960 - NFL merges with AFL and the Dallas Cowboys join the NFL West. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, 49ers, Colts, Cowboys

1961 - Dallas moves over to the East and the Minnesota Vikings are added to the NFL West. Teams: Lions, Bears, Packers, Rams, 49ers, Colts, Vikings

1967 - League is restructured into 6 divisions, NFL (Capitol, Century, Central and Coastal) and AFL (East and West). The Packers are in the NFL Central and we began to see the NFC North take shape. Teams: Packers, Bears, Lions, Vikings

1970 - NFL and AFL merge creating the NFC and AFC within the bounds of the NFL. The Packers division stays the same. Teams: Packers, Bears, Lions, Vikings.

1977 - Tampa Bay joins the NFC Central. Teams: Packers, Bears, Lions, Vikings, Buccaneers

2002 - After 25 years the NFL is restructured to support over 30 teams. The Packers lose Tampa Bay but maintain the basis of their division. Teams: Packers, Bears, Lions, Vikings

Pre-Super Bowl Championship Winners: '33 Bears, '35 Lions, '36 Packers, '39 Packers, '40 Bears, '41 Bears, '43 Bears, '44 Packers, '45 Rams, '46 Bears, '47 Cardinals, '51 Rams, '52 Lions, '53 Lions, '57 Lions, '58 Colts, '59 Colts, '61 Packers, '62 Packers, '63 Bears, '65 Packers

Super Bowl Championship Winners: '66 Packers, '67 Packers, '87 Bears, '98 Packers,

It's interesting that only one other team in the division besides the Packers has won a super bowl.
