There is a story here. What I don't get is that people don't get it.

His guarantee is zero.

Nothing

Squadoosh

Zero Jack-shit

Nada

Nil

He is scheduled to make 6.1 mil with the 200k he's got coming.

This year.

For the 50th time.

Guarantee?

Nothing, squadoosh, Zero Jack-shit, Nada, Nil

This is not hard, just like it isn't hard to figure out that Nick Collins is not there.

Still.

Can you explain it one more time? :thumbleft:

Nick Collins and DD are in totally different positions because of their ages. In Driver's case, I don't see where he has any leverage. He has two capable receivers playing behind him, and I'm sorry but to guarantee a player his age anything next year is ludicrous.

Collins on the other hand has leverage because he is the best safety on our team which pains me to know end. I am not a Bigby or Rouse fan, and I'm hoping Smith "gets it".

My guess is Driver is going to see a front load in his salary for this season. They'll restructure the deal and allow him to earn probably quite a bit more for this year due to GB being so well under the cap and he'll make less as the contract goes on.

It's a smart move for the Packers and Driver. As stated above, contracts aren't guaranteed so Driver will want most of his money to be at the front of I'm assuming a 4 year deal. GB will want to pay him now because he's still productive and they can afford to do so while they save money in the near future assuming Driver's deal isn't worth as much in the last two years as the first two.

That's just me speculating of course.

I think he's pretty much guaranteed to make at least 5.9 mil of the potential 7 mil on his contract this year as long as he makes the team.

He's been underpaid for his value pretty much his whole time with the Packers yet has been more than we ever could have asked for in toughness, team leadership, and production. We have 28 mil in cap space, retroactively reward him!

There is no potential for 7 million this year.

Let me break it down.

He has a 200k off-season work-out bonus. By attending a certain percentage of OTA's etc. he earns this money.

His base salary for 2009 is 3.9 million. He obviously must make the team. His LTBE is in the form of being active on the 45 man team each week, on a pro-rata basis... This is the remaining 2 million of his contract. In other words, he has to make the 53 for his 3.9 million, and will be paid 125k for each week he is on the active 45.

As stated, none of it is guaranteed. He must attend that percentage of workouts to get the 200k. He must make the final 53 to get his base. He must make the active 45 each week to get the 125k per week.

7 million is next year. His base pay goes up by 100k. His workout bonus is the same as this year, 200k. His per game 45 man roster bonus increases to 175k per game...making his contract POTENTIALLY worth 7.0 million.

As an aside, we are taking a 1,366,667.00 cap hit for 2009 in pro-rata signing bonus from when he signed the extension to get to these numbers as enumerated. The confusion seems to be that some authors include this money that was already paid out into this and next years salaries for Driver. That 1.366 mil is gone--already paid out.

My bet is he fears next year, and wants to see if he can get a guarantee now, when he is pretty sure he is going to have value for THIS year...

His concern is obviously valid.

I agree with foster. His concern is that he wants to be a Packer next season. That's about the long and short of it.

While I agree that his concern is valid, it also shows a serious lack of foresight on the part of his negotiating team. If he wanted guaranteed money through 2010, he should have negotiated accordingly the last time he restructured his contract. I love watching Driver play as much as the next man, but part of me wants to see the Packers call his bluff and let him sweat it out till next year. Watching grown men quibble over millions doesn't arouse my sympathy in the least. Screw the "fair market value" -- it's grossly and artificially inflated by the NFL's antitrust exemption anyway.

I'm really starting to get annoyed watching players try to take advantage of the Packers' fiscal responsibility. I say, take a number and get in line. After all, if the Packers were over cap, you wouldn't have a chance to be so vocal. People like Jennings and Kampman need to get paid before they worry about a guy who's already repeatedly restructured his contract.

Agreed. I'd hope that what might happen is a restructuring in which the Packers negotiate less than the $7M he is set to earn. He's worried about being dumped because he costs too much. So, negotiate less money. You don't get cut = good for Donald. team saves some money = good for the Packers.

I doubt he's taking less money....

My guess is the Packers are front loading his contract to use up this years cap room and free up next year cap.
