Kampman: Theres Always a Learning Curve
Posted by Aaron Wilson on June 3, 2009, 7:18 p.m. EDT

Green Bay Packers veteran pass rusher Aaron Kampman broke his silence about being moved to outside linebacker in new defensive coordinator Dom Capers 3-4 defense after years of success as a defensive end.

According to Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette and Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Kampman was extremely short-winded in his answers in a departure from his usual interview style. He apparently reinforced the notion that hes unhappy with the change.

When asked if it had been up to him would he have preferred to remain a 4-3 defensive end, Kampman replied: Im not at liberty to make those choices.

He also acknowledged: Theres always a learning curve.

Per the Journal-Sentinel, Kampman spoke in generally positive terms about the merits of the 3-4 scheme.

Im not saying I dont like it, he said. Im saying Im learning it.

He responded to a question about whether hes hesitant to make the change by chalking that up to media speculation.

It sounds like Kampman is a strong believer that if you dont have anything nice to say, then dont say much of anything at all.

Reading between the lines, its fairly obvious that theres some real displeasure on his part at having to learn a new position after making the Pro Bowl at defensive end.

According to Nickel, Kampman was regularly stonewalled by offensive tackle Allen Barbre when he tried to rush the passer. At one point, Kampman fell to his knees on an attempted bull rush.

I think we've all agreed that Kampman is most likely not too thrilled about the switch. We've covered his contract year, his becoming a Pro Bowl DE and now having to switch schemes as potential reasons for his displeasure. No one has really disputed that. So let's quit the bullshit about it.

Also: I'm noticing a trend w/ the coverage of this story that I do not like. The more AK didn't speak, the nastier the press coverage became. There's the bit quoted above, which I would like to add is disgusting and I hope that reporter is fired, but moreover there's the fact that he's become the poster child for the reporters' favorite new axe to grind: this constant, obsessive hand-wringing that they can't adopt a new D scheme. He's always the very first one they mention, and there's never a hint of confidence that he can do it.

We talk a lot about the athletes these days, but IMO the press is becoming atrocious. And given that they're providing our lens on those athletes, can we trust what we're being told? I wonder.

Sorry for the thread drift.

NFL.com is pretty sure that he isn't to happy either. Like I said in my last post, I agree. I don't think that he's happy. There's something that he doesn't like.

Btw. Atari Bigby - Entering 5th season as Packers cornerback.

Everone's criticizing him for giving the same answers over and over again, but they asked him the same questions over and over again, so you can't really blame the guy.

I'm still going to lean towards Kampman is trying to avoid the media because he's always been a media darling and now they are saying he can't do something. I think he might feel he deserves a chance to prove himself before being thrown under the bus by the media whom he's always given time for.

Maybe? I dunno. Just the impression I've got.

I could buy into that but I don't see any media in bunches saying he can't make the switch. Where did the media doubt him at?

Unless the Packers find a way to highlight Kampmans strengths in some other way, he just doesnt work in this system.
