Packers | J. Thompson enjoying switch to new defense

Rob Demovsky, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports the Green Bay Packers' switch to a 3-4 defense could benefit LB Jeremy Thompson more than any other returning player on the team. Thompson said, "I like it a lot; right now I love it. It gives me an opportunity to be a lot more free. We have one job. If we're in coverage, it's to be in coverage. And if we're rushing, just come as hard as you can off the edge." Thompson has worked as the starter at right outside linebacker during OTAs.

So he is getting 1st string reps at Matthews spot. Our 2 1st rounders are backups hmmmmm.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I'm expecting a lot from him. He's heavier and has a bigger build than I thought, but I think he can be a great OLB in a 3-4. I really liked him as a raw project at DE, but I think he has the skill set to drop back and cover a little as well. I'm thinking of a Shaun Phillips-like player here.

A shame you had to put that jab in there, though. I think that it's not weird for a 26th pick to be a back-up in his first season. And like LTF said, the depth chart is no where near made up for the first game of the season. Raji isn't even a back-up. He's playing DE. Ngata gets a lot of time at DE as well and that pick is still being praised.

I just picked the thread i had open lol. Didn't know what one it was in :p
LTF the main question is wouldn't you kind of have your projected starters playing with the 1st team? Just like i saw a post stating that Raji didn't get any snaps at NT. Isn't that the position we drafted him for? Matthews was drafted to be the OLB opposite of Kampman. I was just curious about why they don't have them with the 1st team.

Honestly, that is how it "should" work... just because you are drafted high shouldn't mean that you are "handed" the starting position. Earn it through your play..

I have absolutely no, I repeat no problem with these two 1st rounders being bumped to the second string.

As far as Raji not getting any snaps at NT.. think about this for a second.. he has played the middle his entire career.. DE is probably an area where he needs "technique" work.. so in a non contact workouts, doesn't it make sense to use it to work on his technique outside. Once they start "hitting" for real, I highly expect him to get snaps inside. Oh, not to mention maybe Pickett needs a little extra technique work at Nose.

OTA's are more mental than anything else... no worries mate.

As far as Thompson goes, I noted it upon Capers getting hired, don't be shocked if Thompson excels in this defense.. long frame with great extension... decent burst... being a long body myself, I can say from experience you can "jump" better from a two point with more explosion than a three point.

I'm not surprised Thompson likes the 3-4 because honestly kind of what he did in college.

Yes, yes Thompson official position was 4-3 DE in college but if you watch the film his job wasn't to play DE. He's job was to stop the other teams best non-WR offensive player.

The coaches seemed to ask him to do different things against different teams.

Thompson would play two gap keeping the LBers clean if the OL was the best on their offense. .

Thompson would rush and attack if the other teams QB was the best on their offense.

Thompson would follow and cover if the other teams RB or TE was the best on their team.

So in other words basically he was the versatile guy that did what ever was needed. You look for versatile guys for LB in the 3-4.

I think he's a perfect fit.... he's been doing what a 3-4 defense would ask him to do since college. The only real difference is starting point. In college he started at the line... and now he's gonna start back with the LBers but he's going to be doing the same thing he did in college.

I'm willing to go as far as say he could be the best 3-4 LB on the team.

That being said Kampman is a better blitzer; The rest are better in coverage but I think Thompson could be the best package... in that he's will be better in coverage than Kampman and be better blitzer and most able to handle the OL than the other LBers.

Why didnt you say that the 1st time..

Your post seemed sarcastic.

Its not the 1st time that a 1st round pick would not be starting..

I suggest reading the entire article and you might get a better understanding on the thinking.

Ted Thompson made the boldest draft-day move of his tenure as general manager of the Green Bay Packers in April, when he traded up to draft linebacker Clay Matthews in the first round.

For that reason, many expect Matthews to be the teams opening-day starter at right outside linebacker.

But dont count out Jeremy Thompson, the second-year pro who, before Matthews, was the only player Ted Thompson had traded up to draft.

In 2008, Ted Thompson sent a fifth-round pick to the New York Jets in order to move up 11 spots in the fourth round to take the defensive end from Wake Forest.

That move paid almost no dividends last season, when the rookie played sparingly. At 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, he had little success as a pass rusher. He didnt have the pure strength to move NFL-sized offensive tackles, and his speed moves didnt work, either. He failed to record a sack and had just 13 tackles in nine games (including three starts).

So, why are the Packers so high on him now?

The switch to the 3-4 defense might benefit Jeremy Thompson more than any returning player on the roster.

I like it a lot; right now I love it, Thompson said of the new defense. It gives me an opportunity to be a lot more free. We have one job. If were in coverage, its to be in coverage. And if were rushing, just come as hard as you can off the edge.

Instead of backing up left outside linebacker Aaron Kampman, Thompson worked as the starter on the right side during organized team activities that began last week.

Hes a guy that has made progress in the short period of time weve been around him, said Dom Capers, the Packers new defensive coordinator. I think he has the ability to play the position.

Just how much the Packers like Thompson and whether he can start ahead of Matthews wont be decided for months, but if Matthews returns from a hamstring injury and Thompson continues to work with the starters when OTAs continue this week, it might be a sign Thompson will be a significant contributor this season. He was working ahead of Matthews even before the rookie pulled his hamstring near the end of the first practice last Wednesday.

Jeremy Thompson didnt play in a 3-4 scheme in college, but in Wake Forests 4-3 defense, the ends dropped into coverage like outside linebackers do in the 3-4.

A lot of things carry over from college, Jeremy Thompson said. I still have to work on it, but we dropped our ends in college, so some of the things are similar to what we did.

Knowing he would need to work on his speed as much as his strength in the new defense, Thompson made it a point to streamline his body. He dropped his weight to 260 pounds and looks more lean and toned than he did last season.

If I can get through the OTAs at 260 and see how that goes, I might stay there, Thompson said. But I might even drop a little bit more. During the offseason workouts, I made it an emphasis to lean down and work on my speed and agility.

Capers said: If you talked to our strength coaches, I think hed be one of our top performers in there overall. Im not sure what his weight was last year, but I like where he is right now. Hes got enough size to him that he can be very physical playing the run, and hes got enough flexibility and athletic ability that he can drop into coverage.

Thompson has spent hours with new outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene, who played the position under Capers. When asked last week which players stood out, the first name Greene mentioned was Thompsons. Greene raved about his athletic ability.

Greene also believes Thompson will be better suited to play the right outside spot rather than the left, where he was slated to line up as Kampmans backup.

Hes left-handed, so generally speaking, a left-handed guy will be more productive rushing the passer from the defensive right side, using his dominant left hand, Greene said. So goes the theory.

What? A positive thread? Nobody is unhappy with their contract or position? ;)

But seriously I think Thompson is going to be a contributing factor for this defense.
