Hey guys.

New to the site here. Was a poster at Football's Future until something happened (what I don't know, I can't seem to log in there anymore).

Anyways. At the start of this off-season, myself and a few others were very confident that our defense would be poised to bounce back, and felt that last year was the result of injuries and play calling more so than that of lack of talent. With that being said, I was really hoping that we would land a defensive coach that would be more of a 43 kind of guy. Sean McDermott was at the top of my list or even Chuck Cecil from the Titans.

Most others who I talked with also agreed at the time (before we hired Capers) that we were really built for a 43 scheme. I mean, if you look at our current roster defensively, and plug in Raji and Matthews into the Bates scheme that we had employed, we actually would be in the best situation talent wise ever to run that scheme.

Two huge run stopping cloggers in Raji and Pickett to press the pocket and Kampy and Jenkins on the ends with Matthews, Barnett (if healthy) and Hawk flying around really would impress me as a defense.

I'm not always a pessimist, in fact I'm usually quite the opposite. I guess I just find myself wishing we had of went a different way with this one.

I do understand MM's theory behind wanting to shake it up, and the fact that drafting 34 players fits what MM wants to do on special teams. But the bonus of being able to draft 34 players in the latter rounds of the draft isn't going to happen anymore with seemingly every team switching over. It isn't like Pittsburgh, Dallas and the Bills are the only teams employing the set anymore. I think I read somewhere that there are 14 teams running it now?!

Just my random thoughts and fears as we go into the season.

Btw kudos on the site.
Very decent and having the videos there to look at is very smooth I might add. I'm sure they will prove to be invaluable when arguing a point with people here 😛.

First welcome aboard..

Second, if we had a DC that was hard nosed and inflexible; basically making us play to his scheme I would be more concerned than I am.

Looking back in Dom's history, and pointing directly at the 1999 Jags club and the defense they played that year put me at ease the day he was hired.

The 1998 Jags were a 4-3 teams.. in 1999 they played a variation of different fronts taking advantage of the personnel that was afforded him.

Dig into that defense.. and you will see many of the same types of personnel questions we have here.. and they ran multiple fronts and finished I believe in the top 5 or 10..

I am ok with it because even if the 3-4 is getting lit up I don't see Capers and crew just sitting and letting it happen. Not like last year where when the 4-3 was getting lit up we changed absolutely nothing.

I said last year when some here thought we ought to go 3-4 it's NOT THAT EASY to do. Now that they have done it and people here are figuring out it's not that easy to do now it's being highly questioned.

#1, we have an excellent defensive staff so I really don't care what we run I think we have the players that will benefit from what these guys bring to the table. I say this and ask "how much better off would we have been to stay in the 43 when we were not very good at that either?"

I think the biggest problem we faced last year was being out-stragized in the battle between OC and DC because Sanders couldn't play the chess game good enough and everybody knew what we were going to bring.

I look at the starting 11 guys and who we can bring in on the sub-packages and I see a pretty darn talented group of guys and now we have a DC whose as good at preparing and specializing schemes for specific opponents as anybody out there.

We were ranked what, twentieth last year? I have no doubt Capers will elevate this group to a much higher level.

I say DC Williams (or what ever the guys name that went to the Saints) is the best 4-3 DC IMO in the NFL.... yeah he didn't get it working with the Jags but the Jags had problems and he got it done every where else.

I'll disagree with that... I think other than Kampman, Barnett and Chillar most of the players fit in about the same with the 3-4 and some players fit better in the 3-4 like Harrell, Thompson and Bigby...

Ummm off the top of my head...

Pats
Dolphins
Jets
Browns
Ravens
Steelers
Chargers
Chiefs (new to it)
Broncos (new to it)
Cowboys
Cards (they're in both 3-4 and 4-3)
Packers (new to it)
49ers

and I'm pretty sure the Bills have been running the 4-3 the last couple of years.... not sure if they've changed or not.

Also I disagree with the it's going to be harder to find guys because in the difference is in the 4-3 you need more talent which everyone is looking for. In the 3-4 you can be less talented and still make it work if you versatile...

There are a ton of more under size DEs (which is what you look for at 3-4 OLB) then right sized DEs (which you look at 4-3 DE).

There are a ton more under sized DT (which is what you look for in the 3-4 DE) then right sized DT (which you look for in the 4-3 DT)

So the different is a lot bigger group for of DEs and OLBs to choose from... BUT the down side is you got to find a good/great healthy NT.

So four positions are easier to get but one is extremely harder.

Im not iffy on the 3-4

I think it will make a GREAT change for us. I dont think our D probably last year was just sanders or our injuries. IMO it had alot to do with how our defense functioned in general (well everything but our secondary; no probs with how we did here).

Our blitz were easily read; our 4 man front was easily blocked, and we couldnt stop the run.

Out of all the D coaches available capers was the best one IMO and he brings the 3-4.

I for 1 always wanted to see us blitz more. 3-4 gives us this
I want to see us stuff the run more 3-4 gives us that

I'm happy with just these 2 things ...

and to top it off the 3-4 is much harder for the opposing O to pick up on

I'm really looking forward to. But it has a lot more to do with the guys implementing the scheme than the scheme itself. I'm glad we held on to winston moss. He's solid. Then we added guys. Trgovac; excellent DL coach, who has had success as a DC but wanted to throttle it back a bit to spend more time with his family. Good for him, great for us. Darren Perry; was a very productive player and was responsible for benching entrenched starters in Pittsburgh and developing Polamalu. Then, on to the raidas where he developed Nnamdi Asomugha. He's got close ties with Dick Lebeau and has already shown what he can do. Then, last but certainly not least, you've got Dom Capers. Took Pittsburgh to the AFC title game in 1994 as a DC. In 1996, took Carolina to the super bowl as HC. 93z has already shown what he did in Jacksonville. Fast forward to 2006 when he went to Miami and turned pass rusher extraordinaire Jason Taylor into defensive player of the year.

No, I'm not iffy on the 3-4

I'm not iffy, on the contrary, I really like it. Can't wait till our defense will resemble that of the Ravens or Steelers. Maybe not talent wise even, but just wiht all the moving around etc.

Anyway, I see how people would want us to play the 4-3 mainly, though.

Our main weak points on defense last year where a real starting OLB opposite of Hawk and the D-line. Now, Jenkins is back on the D-line. He's just a great DE in either scheme. Thompson should've progressed and should be a good 4-3 DE (on passing downs). We have Matthews who would be a great OLB in the 4-3 aswell and Raji to replace Jolly, who is ok, but nothing great. Our Nickel packages should look pretty scary aswell.

I have faith in Dom as a DC. I still believe that is the best move made this off season. I'd sooner have a good/great coordinator with average/good players than average/bad coordenator with good/great players.
