Day 6: Linebackers.

On the roster:
Aaron Kampman, Jeremy Thompson, Brad Jones, Brandon Chillar, Cyril Obiozor, Brady Poppinga, Clay Matthews, Danny Lansanah, Spencer Havner, A.J. Hawk, Nick Barnett, Desmond Bishop.

How many theyll keep: 8 to 10.

Best guess (*=starter): LOLB Kampman*, MILB Hawk*, WILB Barnett*, ROLB Poppinga*, Matthews, Thompson, Chillar, Bishop, Jones.

Breakdown: This is the most difficult position on the roster to handicap, in part because even the three players presumed as starters in the new 3-4 base defense have questions surrounding them. Can Kampman (6-4, 265), a two-time Pro Bowler at end, cover well enough when needed to be a regular on first and second down?

How well will Barnett (6-2, 236) be moving by training camp, roughly eight months after undergoing ACL reconstruction? And can Hawk (6-1, 248) rebound from his quietest season and be physical enough to effectively play the thumper position in the new scheme? Fifth-year veteran Poppinga (6-3, 247) will compete for time with Matthews (6-3, 245), the first-round draft pick (26th overall) out of Southern California.

Poppinga is on the books for $2.85 million in total compensation ($1.9 million base salary, $800,000 roster bonus) and gets the edge here to play on first down, but its safe to say Matthews will fit into rotation and could be a starter by seasons end, if not sooner. Thompson (6-4, 270), a fourth-round pick last year who made little impact as an end (13 tackles in nine games), is expected to back up Kampman on the left side.

Chillar (6-3, 243) could factor at multiple spots, much as he did as a strong-side, weak-side and nickel linebacker in the 4-3 last year (65 tackles). Bishop (6-2, 238) figures as a backup inside, and hes good enough on special teams (27 tackles in two seasons) that he seems to have a decent chance to stick on the roster. Jones (6-3, 232), a seventh-round draft pick, played in a scheme at Colorado that incorporated 3-4 elements and led the Buffaloes last season with 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

His fit for the scheme, presuming he can put on weight, would seem to give him an edge over Danny Lansanah (6-1, 248), who was a bit player on special teams (two tackles) after his midseason call-up last season and will try to earn a backup spot on the inside. Havner (6-3, 248), another inside guy, put in parts of three seasons on the practice squad before getting his chance late last season and seems unlikely to make the cut. Obiozor (6-4, 267) received the largest signing bonus ($6,500) of any undrafted rookie and has the size to play on the outside. Special-teams play will be the tiebreaker for the last spot or two on the 53-man roster.

there's certainly a lot of question marks on defense this year. I'd be worried if it weren't for the confidence (is there a stronger word that I could use instead of 'confidence'?) I have in our new defensive coaches.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not one bit worried about Kampy. The guy's got the best work ethic on the team, and will learn the new role and eventually excel at it. Capers will also tweak the scheme to fit him.

Even if he looks lost the first few games, have patience. Capers knows Kampy is the best of our front 7 and will plan accordingly.

ya even thou there are question marks in Kamps play; we have a Great DC - he said so himself he's going to make the system fit the player not the other way around.

and ya well be playing normal 4-3 most of the time anyways so wont be any change. 50-60% of the time its a 4-3 setup as told by DC (when hired).

Many people seem to be fretting over the talent level here.. IMO, we have plenty of talent on the roster at linebacker.. it is Greene and Moss's responsibility to get them to play up to that talent level.

While I may question the job that Moss did last year with the linebackers and think the only reason he was retained was because of the assistant head coach title, I have confidence in that they reduced his role to inside backers only, Greene has been added to the staff and will bring the right kind of fire and that Capers is running the show overall..

But I can assure this.. I won't hold my opinion back on this group if they don't perform.. unlike some of the Packer beat writers.. call it like it is and honestly..

Yes, and I trust his judgment. His record as DC speaks for itself.

1992 - Steelers - 2nd in points allowed
1993 - Steelers - 8th in points allowed
1994 - Steelers - 2nd in points allowed
1999 - Jaguars - 1st in points allowed
2000 - Jaguars - 16th in points allowed
2007 - Dolphins - 30th in points allowed

Besides the '07 campaign, he's coached some pretty good Ds. In '08, he was a Secondary Coach with the Patriots who had the 8th best D.

I think Capers is a good example of the Peter Principle. He has no business whatsoever being a HC, but he's a dang good DC.

I agree, Capers hire was the best of all the off season moves IMO. With the other hires we now have a very good D staff. I look for a huge improvement even with the new 3-4 change over.

beast (6h) : Seems like he was just pissed because he was no longer the starter
beast (6h) : Campbell is right, he's rich and he doesn't have to explain sh!t... but that attitude gives teams reasons to never sign him again.
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I have some doubt about all that
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I read De'Vondre Campbell's tweet this morning (via the New York Post) Florio says that if he invested his earnings wisely, he will be good
beast (20-Feb) : I haven't followed, but I believe he's good when healthy, just hasn't been able to stay healthy.
dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Felt like he was more interested in his body, than football. He flashed more than I expected
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : When he was coming out, I thought he'd be flash in pan.
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : Joey seems so forgettable compared to his brother for some reason
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Now they're back with another topic
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : oh lol
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I have a script that purges them now.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : 118 Topics with Message.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : what's 118 (besides a number)?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : They got 118 slapped in there.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : that's why it confused the hell out of me
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, but this is taking a headline and slapping it into the Packers Talk
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Wasnt there a time guests could post in the help forum?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : lol good question, kind of impressed!
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : So how is a guest posting?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Tell them its an emergency
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Working. Meetings.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Lots of fun; the spam goes back 4 or 5 pages by this point
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought you'd look for yourself and put 2 and 2 together lol. I overestimated ya ;)
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought Guests couldnt post?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : And gosh that's gonna be fun to clean up! hahaa
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Oh. Why not just say that then? Geez.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : check the main forum, seems a spam bot is running amok
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : What?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Is the Packers online game "Packers Predict" now available for 2024? I can't tell
Zero2Cool (17-Feb) : Bengals planning to Franchise Tag Tamaurice Higgins
Zero2Cool (14-Feb) : Packers are hiring Luke Getsy as senior offensive assistant.
Martha Careful (12-Feb) : I would love to have them both, esp. Crosby, but either might be too expensive.
Zero2Cool (12-Feb) : Keisean Nixon is trying to get Maxx Crosby and Davante Adams lol
Mucky Tundra (11-Feb) : Yeah where did it go?
