You need to realize what shape we would have been in with out Raji...Ryan Pickett would be the only NT worth anything on our roster, now we have a future starting NT for our defense. He dominates on the inside...

Im glad we did not take Crabtree. If it was a position of need, I would understand, but we got the best DT in the draft AND it was a position of need.

Raji = Defensive Player of the Year.

there is some controversy in Ted Thompson selections this year. not selecting crabtree, passing over everett bown, trading away three picks for matthews, when we could have stayed at 41 and got this player anyway.

I am very happy with this draft. Good job Thompson you surprised us all!

Yet again.

At 1st I was a bit surprised that it took both 3rd round picks to move up but after reading in the GB online paper that it was a "value" trade on the NFL trade chart I am willing to concede the point.
Since the draft is not considered to be a deep one I like the idea of getting fewer but more qualified players in the draft. I also was hoping they would shore up the OL and DL which they did.

I thought it was a nice solid draft.

1. Raji vs. Crabtree

I would've gone Crabtree, but that doesn't mean Raji is a bad pick. People go nuts if they don't get the guy they want, but you can't look at it through one perspective. You have to look at the big picture. There is more than one great player in the draft. I think both are going to be great. I like Crabtree as the best player in the draft, but Raji was rated higher than 9th on my board as well so it's not a total loss.

I've been high on Raji all along. I think he's an excellent player. I watched every Senior Bowl practice. I covered it for FFJ and he was the best player there. He was a man amongst boys and getting him at No. 9 is still solid value and fills a need.

2. Trading up for Clay Matthews

They gave up a little much for my liking, but just looking at Matthews as a player, he's pretty good. I rated Matthews 14th overall on my board. I thought he was the best of the USC linebackers. He can rush the passer and he won't blow his assignment like missing the FB in the flat in a clutch situation.

I think he starts.

3. TJ Lang

Solid pick. I think he'll compete for a starting job down the road. I like that he's a little bigger than some of the offensive lineman GB has been going with. Good technique and I think he can play just about anywhere on the roster.

I bet he gets looks at RT as early as this year.

4. Quinn Johnson

Special teams guy IMO. They need special teams players and he could do that. Not a pass catcher, but could be a power run blocker for short yardage situations.

Maybe practice squad too.

5. Jamon Meredith

This is a solid pick IF Meredith listens. I really don't know how uncoachable he is, but it does sound like he's a little arrogant in some of the answers he gave. I think he'll get looks at both tackle and guard. He could start down the road. He was my No. 7 overall tackle.

6. Jarius Wynn

I didn't get this pick that much. It's a DE that needs to add weight. He's a project and we'll see where he is when he reports to training camp. He could be at 285 by then and that would be good. They need five techniques and I liked Ricky Jean-Francois better at that point.

7. Brandon Underwood

Another versatile player. He'll play safety or corner. Very similar to Al Harris in the way he plays, but he'll need a lot of time before he sees the field. If he makes the roster it'd be as a No. 6 corner IMO.

8. Brad Jones

Looks like an inside backer on paper and maybe an inside pass rusher at that, but he'll need to prove he's able to contribute on special teams if he's going to make the roster.

Overall I see at least two starters right away and possibly four down the road.

I'd give it a B. I thought if you don't include the Cutler deal to Chicago, GB had the best draft in the division. If you do include Cutler to Chicago, got give it to the Bears and I liked their draft too so it's not just Cutler.

little update to my thoughts ... I've read and listened too various things the packers organization has said about their picks

I have a more positve feeling about the draft - while not A rating positive but a solid B. Ted helped fill places of need and this was a VERY big concern of mine coming into this off-season. I thought our Oline was in most dire need of some help; along with some Dline backup because of potential injuries etc ...

We took the best DT in the draft and filled our needs at OLB and 2 big Oline guys whom look pretty good (from film).

We also got 3 potential special teams players with the 2 OLBers and the new FB. A few of these guys seem like pet projects but you never know they could turn out as stars (example is the 7th round pick - he seems to play quite well and has a good head on his shoulders).

I'm going to just have to let the matthews trade go - Ted Thompson wanted him and thought he was worth 2 3rds for him.

I have a feeling dom and greene are going to improve our D-guys to make our D a force to be reckoned with in the NFC north.

I wouldn't. The upgrade at WR would be not as big as filling that huge gaping hole up the middle that opponents seemed to find every single freaking game.

I don't think any ideology is perfect, and BPA is just another ideology. There are exceptions to every rule, and this is clearly an exception. Ted Thompson won't say it in a press conference because he doesn't like to give away his hand.

I think so too. So we got a starter. Right now, with as much depth as we got, I'd take a starter over more depth. We only get 53 players. There comes a time when you're not making the team better, and this is one of them. I'm stoked we got Matthews for what we did.

You think we may be going away from that ZBS? Just wondering.

Yeah, I know MM likes versatile players. I remember him years ago saying that he'd like his linemen to be able to play sides (Left side vs right side instead of Tackle vs Guard).

4. Quinn Johnson

Special teams guy IMO. They need special teams players and he could do that. Not a pass catcher, but could be a power run blocker for short yardage situations.

Our STs could use improvement. If this guy makes the team, that's cool.

Not too worried about da Bears. They'll find a way to lose, Cutler or no Cutler. We sweep them in '09 and fight the Vikings for the NFC North crown.

I gave it an A. My Ted Thompson meter was teetering closer to hate at the end of last year and now it's swinging closer to love.

BJ gives the option of Ryan to move around..That is what makes me feel better for that pick..

As far as Clay sounds like he has all the right tools and inside help from dad and uncle, lets see if it can be put onto the nfl level now.

I havent had much chance to look at the rest yet

Overall I like our draft. Like many I wish we could have kept on the the 3's from the trade. If our 1's work out as well as expected and a couple of our late picks pan out it will have been a very good draft, anymore and it will have been a great draft.

I'm pretty confindent that Clay and Raji are going to be players and future starters.

If we get a starting RT out of Meredith or Lang, then I'm real happy. I also think we will see some good things from the fullback from LSU.
