Report: Gonzalez Traded To Falcons
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 23, 2009, 2:30 p.m. EDT

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a 2010 second-round draft pick, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

This marks the first trade between former New England Patriots colleagues Scott Pioli, the Chiefs General Manager, and Thomas Dimitroff, the Falcons General Manager.

Ironically, the 10-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time All-Pro rejected a trade to Atlanta last year.

Now, though, the Falcons have an established young quarterback in Matt Ryan.

Gonzalez caught 96 passes last season for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns.

In a dozen NFL seasons, Gonzalez has caught 916 career passes for 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns.

UPDATE: The Chiefs have officially confirmed the deal and released statements from Chiefs team owner Clark Hunt and Pioli.

On behalf of my family and the Chiefs, I want to thank Tony for his time in Kansas City, Hunt said. Over the last 12 seasons, Tony has been one of the finest players in Chiefs history, and he will always be remembered as a member of the Chiefs.

His play on the field speaks for itself he holds almost every major NFL record for tight ends, and he is arguably the best to ever play his position. We wish him the best in Atlanta.

Added Pioli: From an organizational as well as personal standpoint, there are mixed emotions. I have the highest personal and professional respect for Tony and consider him to be a future Pro Football Hall of Famer.

A 2nd round pick for a TE in the twilight of his career.. Not a steal in my book.. fair value to slightly overpaying to obtain him.

2nd round pick spends the same next year as this.. heck it might even be better if they redo the CBA with a realistic salary numbers for draft picks..

Well they just said on ESPN that the reason for the pick next year is because the Falcons have a few extra compensation picks from previous deals so they can use them and get the 2nd back. Plus i see them making the playoffs and that 2nd will pretty much be like a 3rd rounder.

I think the Falcons have a ton of questions in that secondary.. hardly a lock to make the playoffs. IMO.

About right for TG..

I think Matt Ryan is a fine QB, but I can't help think he's benefiting from that running game.

Well okay but you've just taken away a valuable asset for Cassel in my opinion. Falcons got a deal there. I would have assumed two draft picks for a fair deal.

Ya, if you discount the prediction that there is going to be about 10 bazillion "rebitches" posted here and elsewhere until the 9th pick, when the rebitchers can switch to bitching about the 9th pick. I wish we could just cut through all the paperwork and dig up the old thread and repost the same crap that got whined about last year and be done with it.

I agree. And even then he was good, not amazing, although he is still a rookie. I think he might be one of the most overrated players in the game. Good for the kid though, but we'll see where he goes. Ryan Leaf had a couple of good games in the beginning aswell. So did Roethlisberger. It can go either way.

I like this deal. A 2nd is something a contending team should give and I think the Falcons think that they are there themselfs. That's all KC could get, though.

I do agree that they take away a weapon from Cassell. Someone who can get him settled there. I'm not sold on Matt and I think he might struggle even more this way than he would just getting to a worse offense than he was in.

Tyler Thigpen liked him aswell, the real talent they have on the bench there.

dfosterf (22-Feb) : I have some doubt about all that
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I read De'Vondre Campbell's tweet this morning (via the New York Post) Florio says that if he invested his earnings wisely, he will be good

dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Felt like he was more interested in his body, than football. He flashed more than I expected
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : When he was coming out, I thought he'd be flash in pan.
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : Joey seems so forgettable compared to his brother for some reason
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
