Casserly was pointing out the various prospects, and their pluses and minuses. He said something that I paid close attention to. In effect, pretty much every tight end coming out of college has one thing in common. According to his words, "His next block will be his first." He preached patience. He said you really don't know what you have until the second year at the position. I thought this was wise.

I didn't know that TEs where used so little to block in college. I do think that TE is one of the most underrated positions though. I mean, Dustin Keller is a great player already and was a great player in college, yet, goes 30th overall. They're one step behind P, K and FB.

Except for the Jets, they prefer Ken O'Brien over Marino, draft Kyle Brady over Sapp and get a FB with the 21st pick overall.

Most TE's that can block tend to be 4th round or later. The receiving TE's will all go earlier but like the guy says...most can't block which is no surprise. This happens in almost every draft.

We had the same issue with Finley. We knew he was a great receiver but not a blocker. Didnt stop us from drafting him at all.

It's not a big an issue as some people might think. Its easier to teach a TE to block than to run routes and catch.
