Why does golf make so much money?

Up until the economy took an absolute crap, a top-of-the line current driver went for $499.00

That's before you went and had it re-shafted because one of your golfing buddies out-drove by 6 inches once. Tack on a another $125.00 for that move.

Manufacturing costs on above? At least 20 - 30 bucks.

(OK exaggerating a little, but not much)

You see, in order to hit the ball straight and long, you need a low-wind co-efficient regressed center of gravity compensatable titanium forged case back design with forgiving groove sweetspot technology that is upgradedeable, yet traditional in design and appearance, with hopefully a swoosh stripe, but then there is ping, calloway and taylormade to tell you why you are front-runnin'... understand? Me either, but I'm still buyin'...I need those extra 6 inches.

that's why.

Oh.....i DO have a nice Ping 9 iron. My wife found it in the water at a golf course she was at with a friend of hers. Some guy must have got mad, and flung it into the drink!

I kinda knew I was settin' myself up for some good humor with the 6" comment.

Your Ping 9 iron comment prompts some fantastically humorous memories for me. Amongst my friends, I know a fellow we collectively call "Wild Bill", or dependent upon which amongst us is doing the talking, "Wild Bull". He is the nicest fellow in the world, but he has a bit of a temper, and is quite impulsive. Tripp and others that golf will tell those that do not that one of the absolute neatest things about golf is that you find some things out about yourself and those that you play golf with. Golf will do that.

Wild Bull is a thrower. Not just your run-of-the mill thrower either. He also has some wealth to him, so his antics can get quite pricey. Normally I stay away from throwers, but the entertainment value involved with him in your foursome far outstrips any of those sensibilities on my part.

About 8 of us used to make pilgrimages to Florida to play golf in the winter. We bet (incognito as regards Wild Bull) as to how many sets and when he will be tossing his clubs into the nearest water hazard. I remember one year no one was even close in the "pool", because Bull fired 'em into the drink on the very first hole we played. He then gets to go to the clubhouse and pay country club golf shop prices for his next set. No, he doesn't even consider going after them...he's the Bull.

Now, his record is only two sets of golf clubs per one week trip, which might not seem SO bad, excepting the fact that he ties his record almost every trip. The last time we went, I went "in" for both sets (both Callaway t.o.l.'s-I'm a Ping man) and gave a set to two of my neighbors. Now my neighbors know I'm going back to playing, and the very first question out of their mouths this past weekend was, (and they have never met "Bull") . "Hey Dave, are you going to play some golf with Bull this year?" Guess they're lookin' to update their sets. :thumbleft:

Edit:

One year I got disqualified from the pool because after he hit a ball into the water, I said, "Nice shot, Bill." That was considered blatant cheating, as it instantly triggered the subsequent toss, according to my colleagues.

The mask and snorkel I had in my golf bag was used as evidence against me in the discussion...Geez, what a suspicious bunch.

I love the game.

However, the best description of the game I ever heard was.....

"Golf is a very expensive way of playing marbles."

I loved marbles at recess in elementary school. Guess that is why I love Golf.

Tiger is a freak. There is no one in any sport that you can compare him to as far as what he has done against the competition. Plus throw in the fact that Golf is the only true world wide sport that includes the US of A, and it is really "Sick" how dominant he is. He is one of the only athletes that you can say is head and shoulders above everyone in the world.

Mike Weir is my favorite player though. I love the guy.

50 Highest paid athletes; 2008

This list angers me a little. Not the part about Tiger Woods at #1, but the part about Phil Mickelson at #2. Phil has a lot of fans, and I understand folks want to create some drama with respect to him and Tiger, but I just don't see it. It is Tiger and then everyone else that happen to also be professional golfers, at least in name, and Mickelson chokes so often that I have personally coined the idiotic three-putt as "Mickelsoning it." Phil is the friggin' choker in the sport, imo.

I think Phil should give half of his earnings to Tiger, that would be just about right. lol

Phil is loved because he will crash and burn on occassion. He comes off as human by hitting the beer tent while leading the US Open going into the final hole. I respect the hell out of Tiger, but when he is winning you might as well turn off the television he is the most mentally tough athlete I have ever seen. Phil actually reminds me a lot of Brett where he can amaze you with his talent, and then rip your heart out because he so often refuses to make the safe play. Many would call Brett a choker as well.
