One thing that sticks out to me at the end ... he was asked why he got married ... he said 'because I loved her'. Past tense?

The decision to get married was made in the past so a past tense response is appropriate.

If he had spoken in a complete sentence his grammatically correct response would have been "I married her because I loved her." In a grammatically correct sentence the verbs would be in the same tense or what's called parallelism (or parallel sentence structure).

On a personal note, what difference does it make if he loves his wife or not? Let him work out his own marriage problems.

He granted someone a five minute interview and the interviewer decided to hammer on those questions instead of Golf related questions. I was looking forward to hearing about how he had been practicing, where, etc ... but you know how drama sells so ...
