The decision to get married was made in the past so a past tense response is appropriate.
If he had spoken in a complete sentence his grammatically correct response would have been "I married her because I loved her." In a grammatically correct sentence the verbs would be in the same tense or what's called parallelism (or parallel sentence structure).
On a personal note, what difference does it make if he loves his wife or not? Let him work out his own marriage problems.
