mm likes players who can do multiple things, true or false? TRUE.

When thinking about that, does the saying, good at everything, master of nothing ring a bell?

Can we win a NFL Championship with a bunch players who are good at everything, but don't have anything mastered?

I'm starting to question if we will. Many of us want to blast Ted for his FA signings, or lack of. Keep in mind Ted said he'd never force a player onto his head coach. That means Mike has to approve of the player.

Ted's first year here I think we'd all agree he was more 'active' than he has been since. We many talks to many of the higher tier players. We even nailed Ryan Pickett and Charles Woodson.

Year One, Sherman was HC.
Year Two and since, McCarthy.

Ted's FA signings from year one have equally been if not succeeded the impact of his FA signings since.

I don't quite agree with your premise. It is true MM likes players who are more versatile. This is not a flaw but a strength. Injuries are part of the game you must as a team have redundancy. Now one can argue thst the quality of tthe depth was lacking last year especially in the d-line. Football is probaly the closest one can get to warfare in the terms of piece for piece application of tactics and personel. Pieces must be able to interchange to a small degree. Do I think we can win a championship? Sure why not. What is stopping this team from that is not so much the talent but perhaps the tactics. Hence the change in d.
I am therefor I think.

I disagree with your disagree. (wait, does that mean I agree?)

I understand what you're saying, and believe it to be true, to a degree. What I'm saying is I'd like for us to get some STARTERS from the FA market. Not a lot, just one or two. We keep signing backups that can play several positions. Frank Walker was supposed to be able to play all secondary positions, Marquand Manuel was supposed to be able to play both safety spots, Brandon Chillar is supposed to be able to play all LB positions. Now this Duke Preston fella is supposed to be versatile as well.

If you can do many things well, you can't do one thing great. That's my point. We are lacking GREAT players.
Greg Jennings, Aaron Kampman and of course Charles Woodson. Those three are the closest we have that can have an argument made for greatness.

Christ, we can't even find a great punter!

The sad thing is I bet if we could find a coffin corner punter who couldn't hold worth a shit, we'd pass on him for a guy who can boom the ball deep and is an excellent holder. Although that's just a personal gripe of mine. I think a backup QB should always be the older to give the fear of a fake.

And yes, I am sure we use Flynn for our holding duties, I was just giving an example.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being versatile. Pre-draft "buzz" is always positive for a guy that has "versatility" and can play more than one position.

The point, and McCarthy addressed this after the season, is that you do not want to overload the young guys on your team. Even if they are capable of learning more than one position DON'T do it until they have the best position they play down pat first.

I think being versatile is a general backup role player trait that can get them on a roster and can be a plus. It's hard to find a guy like Woodson who actually can move from one position to another on a starting basis and play at the level you need him to.

Don't get me wrong, having versatile players is good, but having a 50 out of 53 team full of them I think is holding your team back.

I definitely agree, He was an average Punter but he def had some upside, his replacement (whom infuriated me so much that he will only be referred to as THE replacement) was probably the worst pickup we've had in the last 2-3 years.

What is it about GB coaches being enamored with bad punters? Or is it the GM or one of the scouting staff? This is 2 regimes in a row.

I don't know, but I remember Bear fans making fun of us years ago (under Sherman) when we traded up to get a punter in the 3rd round. That was not fun.
