This needs to be considered for either side of the argument. Sherman packaged picks to move up, Thompson moves down to garner more picks. Sherman's mistakes cost us more than Thompson's trading down.

I liked Sherman's approach FAR more than Thompson, too bad Sherman just missed the boat so many times. I still say Javon Walker was worth the pick, even though he's a nobody now. I think he chose Aaron Kampman as well. Surely there are others.

Boy, look at the ones still in the league. A nice portion are starters or started a decent portion they were able to! lol

Javon Walker was a top tier WR at one time.

He had 2 problems though:
1) Ego.
2) Injuries.

Had Walker not had problems like that, he'd be a Randy Moss lite. I was very happy having Javon Walker on our team until that injury.

I think people forget just how good he was at catching balls that other WRs simply won't get to.

I know YOU haven't forgotten. As much as you and I disagree on a lot of stuff, Javon Walker was one thing we agreed on. I think he was severely underrated.

I remember seeing the guy catch passes between two defenders all day long. Used to drive opposing Ds crazy.

But I also remember there were other people who used to dog him and undercut how good he was. Personality problems aside, Walker was Favre's most physically talented WR since Sterling Sharpe. It's just a shame things happened the way they did.

Favre isn't allowed to play with a true elite receiver, it seems.

Sharpe, Walker, Jennings, they/he always seems to get away after a while.

Javon did indeed look like a great receiver, it's a shame that he never actually got to play anymore like he did after his GB years. The guy seemed like a jackass, but I really did want to see him have a comeback in Oakland.

In person Javon is a great guy. Probably too nice and naive at times though.

The Sherman argument can be summed up very easily.

Sherman micromanaged.
Thompson delegates.

True, but the fact remains MS walked into a loaded boat of RW's personnel and as time went by never made the team better. From the time he got there until they fired him the "D" went downhill and he never got the players in behind what was a very good offense but getting older.

He was one of the few and fortunate men to be named GM at a time when the team was pretty much loaded. There was a HUGE difference in where the personnel level was at when he came on board and when Ted Thompson got here.

Over his entire tenure we were LUCKY if we got one player a year out of the draft that turned into a contributer AND by the time he left the Cap was a wreck.

Apples and oranges.

MS's 4 years as GM/HC, which again I will state was a failed experiment by NFL teams, hoping that 1 guy could do 2 jobs, was 2001 - 2004.

10-6
10-6
MS inherited a 8-8 team, his first year as HC only he went 9-7.
Throw in the 2005 season, TT's 1st as GM, MS's winning percentage is still well over :500

The beginning of 2005 The Packers were STILL ONE OF THE BETTER TEAMS IN THE NFL!!!!!.

Who here is going to argue that injuries didn't play a large part for The Packers falling to 4-12?
All teams have injuries, but in 2005 The Packers were completely decimated, most WR's out for some or all of the season, 5 or 6 RB's out for season, O-line in shambles due to all the changes.

Let me make something clear.

I am not defending MS, he made many mistakes, but I am tired of some on this forum saying "The Packers are much better off since Ted Thompson took over."
Ted Thompson looked like he had things turned around, goning from 13-3 to 6-10 is not progress.

Now here we sit, waiting for 2009. A new DC, a new 3-4 scheme being put into place.
Does this mean that Ted Thompson gets another "PASS", if The Packers have a losing season? Because the players on the roster were not suited for the 3-4?

After all this crap, my only point is.
The Packers, at this point, are not better off than they were when MS was GM/HC.

They have a chance to be, but as I stated earlier, it is time to start WINNING MORE THAN LOSING!!!

Year 5 for Ted, he has HIS team in place. He has HIS coaches in place.
I am hoping for a 10-6 or better season.
Ted Thompson has asssembled the talent he wants, let's see what they can do.

I'm sorry Buckeye but the Packers were NOT one of the better teams in the NFL in '05. The defense was lousy and we were not even a clear favorite for the North going into that year.

When your run defense is ranked like 25th your going nowhere in that league.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
