Will our players like this new scheme? I mean, it's a pretty 'lousy' job to be a D-lineman in this defense.

Personally, I think that statement underestimates the competitive nature of players. Most (majority of them, I'd say) want to win. Yes there is a big pay days, party scenes, clubbing, etc. that players enjoy, but I think it's important to stress most of the NFL players are competitors. Having a reward (winning) can sure make a tedious task seem more tolerable.

Oh, I agree. I think the Packers' have one of the least selfish roster in the league. When you see what our players do for eachother with ints and the blocking by receivers etc.

What I meant though, is that there are alot of players like TO out there aswell. Granted, they usually play WR or so, but you never know. For all we know Jenkins will be upset that he won't get his sacks and will leave the orgization. We really don't know alot about him personally. (Or at least, I don't)

Great post once again though, AADP.

What I see will be a defense where the linemen will have several different roles on any given play and their assignments a mixed bag.

Defense is a team thing and a pride thing and if they can make stops and produce three-and-outs I doubt they care a whole lot about what scheme they are in or their own personal role.

I doubt they really care what the heck you ask them to do as long as it works. That's the key. Nobody is happy when you work your tail off and it isn't working.

I understand this, but DTs don't get as much sacks as DEs. This is somewhat comparable, as the the D-Line will mostly try to get into the gaps to stop the run or drag two O-lineman with them, so the LBer can get in and make the sack. Or at least, that seems the most logical way to do this for me.

Lets just take a look at the Cowboys' stats.

The DEs have contributed for 5.0 sacks. Ware had 4 times as much, and that's just one LBer.

Now I have to be fair and say that Ware outshines the Cowboys DEs looking at quality, but still, you get my point.

He's gonna get some sacks, but it's not like the amount he would get playing in the 4-3. Especially since I don't see him drop back to an LB position from time to time to rush. He's to much of a DT/DE Hybrid for that.

On Warhawk's post, I totally agree with you. I think the players will be more thrilled to play in an amazing defense than they would be about racking up numbers individually and suck bigtime.

The problem I was addressing though, is that you don't get alot of personal info on alot of the players. I asume we don't have them, but there are alot of prima-donna players in the league that tend to prefer stats over wins. (Thinking TO and Ocho Sucko here)

Actually, I think you might be surprised about that. I don't know for sure (and really, nobody does because it's not like we really know these people), but my sense of it is that the TOs and Chad Johnsons are the exception rather than the rule. It's better press to focus on guys like that (whereas Ahman Green liking the quiet life in GB and enjoying fishing is worth maybe one human interest blurb), so we hear about them constantly, and meanwhile the vast majority of NFL players just go out and do their jobs.

Might sound a bit pollyanna, but that's my sense of it.

If I recall Cullen Jenkins was getting very good pressure when playing the inside last year before going down.

Besides, do you really think they won't get him in position to ever rush from the outside? An awful lot of chirping about utilizing your personnel and finding ways to use their strengths for nothing if thats the case.

Gee whiz. They already said they are excited about Jenkins and what he can do in this defense. I highly doubt that means rushing from one place all year long.

I am quite sure part of the plan will be to scoot him over at times and bring pressure from the middle backers.

I think you are mostly right.
Most of these players do have a sense of good after they grow up.
Coming out of college and having been on the proverbial pedastal since they were in high school and all of a sudden becoming wealthy makes alot of them think they are supermen.
Then in a few years they grow up (with the exception of a few) and realize that they better slow down because they have alot to lose.
