Why is Shedeur Sanders falling in the 2025 NFL Draft?

As a former NFL Scout, allow me to explain.

1. He’s not good enough on his game film.

We could stop there.

I’ve evaluated every snap in 26 documented games of Sanders dating back to 2022 at Jackson State and I studied his games at Colorado.

In addition to that…

2. He has more character concerns than any prospect I’ve ever seen. If you watch these 13 short video clips that I put together and tagged every team in the league, you’ll see what I mean ➡️ x.com/firstroundmock…

3. He is a medical risk after having a fractured back in 2023 (link: si.com/college/colora…).

4. No NFL team wants the public relations circus that comes with him. Nobody wants Deion Jr. implying his brother is a religious martyr on his X account because Shedeur is not getting his way —or him running around with his camera releasing a bunch of uncontrolled video footage and having that kind of “information leak.” No team wants to have Deion working through his influential media contacts to pressure and leverage the team to “start Shedeur” or to attempt to backdoor the coaching job with that organization. NFL head coaches understand they are firing themselves by bringing in Shedeur.

5. Respectfully, Sanders hasn’t faced much high level competition and when he did, Colorado was 1-7 vs. top 25 teams. His stats dim when they are put into context.

On May 14, 2023, my first scouting report, “Shedeur Sanders: NFL Practice Squad Grade,” was published.

Link to that scouting report: firstroundmock.com/2023/05/shedeu…

I put an initial 6th round grade on these 3 games I evaluated of him at Jackson State.

On film he looked raw.

On May 6, 2024, my second scouting report on Sanders was published after a 10-game study of his film during his first season at Colorado, “Shedeur Sanders Graded as NFL Practice Squad Prospect.”

Link to that scouting report: firstroundmock.com/2024/05/shedeu…

This is when I moved Sanders down on my draft board to an undraftable free agent grade.

I wrote, “Sanders looks like an FCS QB trying to survive in the FBS.”

The offense looked elementary, his confidence was up and down and the character issues began showing. I was floored when I saw him poke an opponent in the eyes when they played Colorado State. He was bad under pressure, and I saw how much he would struggle throwing timing routes in the NFL. His deep ball was solid, but the sacks and pass breakups were piling up, and he looked hesitant and afraid to make a mistake throwing. There were other things too I outlined in that scouting report, but I remember feeling completely underwhelmed by his play and character as it related to and projected to the NFL.

On January 24, 2025, my next evaluation on Sanders was published.

Link to that scouting report: firstroundmock.com/2025/01/shedeu…

All his 13 game 2024 film study did was re-confirm his sub-par skill set and my final undraftable free agent grade on him.

It also exposed the new “NFL influenced” offensive system Pat Shurmur implemented there. It was one big manipulation designed to make Sanders “look” more like an NFL QB by building his stats by exploiting average to below average college defenses, but I saw through it. Sanders was the same slow runner and hesitant mostly one read thrower he was at Jackson State. Only now, his concerning conduct was escalating on his video timeline that I provided in the beginning of this post. He was bolder and more physical. He had gotten so out of control that he shoved a teammate and pushed a referee, and got heated with a ball boy.

From there, he refused to practice (or play) in the East-West Shrine Bowl event and the NFL Combine further attempting to dictate to the league how this was going to go. His Pro Day on his terms and turf was also underwhelming.

Add in he has the slowest time to throw in this draft class (3.00 seconds PFF), and he was the most sacked QB in the FBS the past two seasons (94) and here we are and the NFL is seeing what I’m seeing.

when Cleveland picked him, everybody said. "figures". Has any other team selected 2 qb's in any draft?

Also, it was hought that the Browns (and Rams) traded back to get an extra 1st next year so they can leverage two 1st into making sure they get a shot at a better QB prospect in the 2026 draft.

it is disappointing that with all of the so-called "experts" on ESPN, the NFL network, and other outlets, that none of them enumerated any of the points in the analysis.
As per many of the previous posts and other threads, there must be a high element of group think not only among NFL teams, but among the media.

With all due respect, I don't believe QB Sanders fell to the 5th on talent alone... I'm not sure he deserved to be a 1st rounders (but QBs that I don't think should be 1st rounders get drafted in the 1st).

But in that weaker QB draft class, Sanders, talent wise, was among the top 5 QBs. (And he was the 6th QB taken, so I don't think that's too far of a stretch), but I believe I could of seen someone with his talent fairly going in round 2. Because of the weaker conference, maybe round 3 would of been better, but round 5 was clearly a drop IMO.

This article describes what I'm guessing happened... Deion has been telling him, for his entire life, to ignore the haters and outside noise, just be yourself and do what you do.

And the young QB has listened to his Dad and it has gotten him far... not caring what others people think.

BUT the scouting process is different, they, the scouts, the coaches, they want you to care about their opinion, they want you to be nervous, they want to see you give maximum effort in trying to win then over, and please them in the scouting process and scraping to learn every last detail to show that you can learn it in minimum amount of time.

And that's just the complete and total opposite way that he's been raised... he didn't go out of his way for the process, he didn't try to impress the scouts and coaches, he didn't care what they thought, he was just himself and assumed they would grade him based on the tape and not giving extra effort to show up during the draft process...

And he was dead wrong about what they cased about.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/giants-brian-daboll-was-reportedly-one-coach-who-had-negative-experience-with-shedeur-sanders/amp/

According to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones, Sanders' slide is a reflection of how he carried himself through the pre-draft process.

An unnamed coach even told NFL Media that his interview with Sanders was "the worst formal interview I've ever been in in my life," which leads to several other questions: Did Sanders struggle in every interview? Did he purposefully bomb interviews with teams he didn't want to go to? Todd McShay of The Ringer reported recently that Sanders' interview with the New York Giants and Brian Daboll was one that did not go well.

"Shedeur didn't have a great interview with Brian Daboll in a private visit," McShay said. "An install package came in. Preparation wasn't there for it. [He] got called out on it. Didn't like that. Brian didn't appreciate him not liking it."

McShay said he knew two personnel people that were members of quarterback-needy teams picking in the top 10 of the draft order that were in the rooms when Sanders interviewed. McShay said that these interviews weren't disastrous, but he was told they simply did not go well. Those personnel people told McShay they didn't get the sense that Sanders cared about what they thought of him.

Now, should players truly care what scouts think of them? Honestly probably not, as a lot of things are wrong...

But they should
1) Pretend to care
2) Care about how they can get better
3) Show respect
4) Try to learn everything before going for the interview

But I think this issue is that Deion (who honestly might not know himself), taught him the exact opposite for how to handle an interview process.

You try to impress the interviewer. Not expect to already be there, and other people opinions don't matter.

I don't know if it is true or not. (I heard it on a podcast.) I am not sure if it is the interview you refer to Beast in your last post. A team purposely made errors in their install for Sanders. They wanted to test him. He didn't find them. When they pointed it out, he didn't care and got angry with them.
In the greater scheme of things he is probably right that their fake install is meaningless. In reality he is wrong because you have to show you are capable of discerning every aspect of your job and be willing to make sure it is 100% correct. You have to prove you know what you are doing. You have to prove you can run the franchise. He failed to do so.
On the other hand, I don't know if this is normal treatment of every QB or not.

You're putting together highlights of someone and those plays are taking up 40%-50% of the clips? Those throws are ones any QB can and should make. Then there's a lot of passes that the WR had to make large (moving 3-5 yard) adjustments to catch or come back to catch while they were open. He also holds the ball for what seems like a long time and takes a lot of unnecessary sacks. This is one contribution to his completion percentage. The other is he threw a lot of bubble screens and other really short passes.

Granted, I am not QB scout, not at all. That being said, after watching more and more of Shedeur I couldn't believe there was talk of him being drafted in the top five (Deion's claim). Weak QB class or not, I didn't think he was worth anything higher than 4th, maybe 3rd if in the right situation with the right coaching staff.

My dad was hoping the Steelers would pass on him. My cousin was pissed they didn't use 1st round on him. My dad had mentioned a name of someone I had heard about, Will Howard. I started watching the highlights on him and other clips. I like Will Howard far more than Shedeur Sanders for QB. Howard, the ball pops off his hand and he hits guys in stride and can lead them. Shedeur cannot and I think he'll have early success, but once teams realize he cannot beat them deep, they will destroy him.

Talent was a part of where he was drafted, no question. Going to social media and saying you don't remember a teammate. That's a bad bad look. I'm fine with it being a fact, but you don't go posting it. If you remove a lot of the negative stuff, I don't think he goes higher than 3rd round, MAYBE 2nd round if a team thinks they can improve his arm and accuracy and leadership.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
