Looks like we may have some competition in the McDermott sweepstakes:

McDANIELS WANTS McDERMOTT
Posted by Mike Florio on January 11, 2009, 9:46 p.m. EST

One of the burning questions for Broncos fans in the wake of the news that Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will replace Mike Shanahan as head coach is this: Hey, we thought it was our defense that sucked?

Though owner Pat Bowlen opted not to hire a defensive-minded coach to beef up a unit that has underachieved for years, McDaniels plans to address that side of the ball by pursuing Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott as the teams next defensive coordinator.

McDermotts name surfaced recently as a surprise candidate for the vacant defensive coordinator position in Green Bay.

But Mort points out that McDermott remains under contract for another year, which means that the Eagles can block him from leaving for anything other than a head-coaching job.

Moreover, the fact that the Eagles are still playing games makes McDermott completely off limits, possibly through February 1.

Mike Nolan is going to be named defensive coordinator in Denver. Makes sense as Josh McDaniels comes from a 3-4 background and plus Nolan can run the defense and McDaniels the offense.

Gregg Williams is also going to end up in New Orleans in my opinion if the Packers keep up this long approach.

I think in the end GB may end up sticking with Winston Moss unless they can lure McDermott out of Philly.

An aggressive 4-3 approach may be the best fit for the players the Packers have and I also think it's the same approach Winston Moss wants to go in as well as well as Mike McCarthy.

I just don't think Moss is the guy.....there is too much riding on this hire. Ted Thompson and MM can't afford more losing. If they really wanted Moss, they would have hired him already.

I'd prefer Williams over Nolan, but I'd rather McDermott over both of them and Moss. That is of course with the assumption that McDermott follows Jim Johnson's defense very closely. I've always liked the Eagles defense under Jim.

We're running out of time...better hurry up and make a decision, McCarthy. Nolan is basically gone, Williams could be next. I say go ahead and offer Williams a contract and see how he does.

I think in the back of Mike McCarthy's mind, Winston Moss is his fallback guy. If he can't get Gregg Williams or Sean McDermott, Moss is who is left.
