I don't know if it was eyewash, but Gutey was talking up the linebacker room in particular McDuffie, so I think whether or not its the right thing to do, there will be no first round ILB

Further IIRC McDuffie played for Hafley perhaps Hafley has a high degree of faith in McDuffie...at least he will know the system.

Statistically speaking, I saw somewhere that roine one LB is not a good choice. Very few pan out. I think they said off ball LB though.

Also, I don't think this draft has many LBers that are even worth considering in the first round from a talent perspective and the one that might, has an awfully long injury history, he's already 24, injuries most years going all the way back to highschool.

Why not? You position seems arbitrary.

Are you saying never draft and ILB in round 1, or in this draft, or for this team?

In this draft? ILBer is kinda weak for the first round. Consenus is saying the best ILB is Jackson Powers-Johnson at 24 which is right in their area but a solid OT is a greater need. Most of the OT are rated better so I am assuming one of them will fall to the Packers.

For this team? I am going to say this is correct. Typical picks in the first round are the premier positions like: OT (Gute hasn't had to do so in the past.) QB (He only needed one and he got it.) CB (He has taken a couple of swings here. Only Ja has sort of panned out.) Edge or OLB and DL. Probably WR too but GB has never shown they need to take one in the 1st. Savage and Walker are two second level positions that they took in the 1st but other than that - see above. There is no "never" or "always" when it comes to the draft.
There are opportunities in the 2nd and 3rd round to select other positions.

I'm stupid when it comes to trying to figure out which player to pick. I never know enough about them to make an educated choice.
And truth is, look at how many "can't miss" first round picks end up as busts. More than most can count.
So I leave it up to the professionals, and hope the Packer brass make a good choice.

Um, I think you have your labels confused.

ILB is inside Linebacker
IOL is inside Offensive Line

Powers-Johnson is a Center/OG (which I think you have correct, it's just the ILB label doesn't go with him).

But I can see the Packers taking Johnson, or an OT like the one from Duke and playing them on the inside.

Draft logic says the valuable positions are said to be, QB, CB, Edge Rusher, OT, S, TE.

Gute has always stuck to that, except the year when they drafted Walker, Wyatt and attempted to trade back up into the first for Watson. But outside that year (and outside of "W" last names) Gute has so far stuck with the most valuable positions in round 1.

As for what positions... as far as position talent of this draft that's going to be in the 20s, I'm guessing OL and CB are the going to be the positions with the most talent in that range.

So I'm thinking OL, CB or the Safety from Minnesota.

People are down in the Minnesota Safety as he did poor in athletic testing, but I'll say the tape shows he's a lot better athlete on the field than the athletic testing numbers show. He might be best as a SS, but our new defensive coordinator talked about the importance of a good Safety coming up and making a quick tackle, and I thought that sounded like the SS role.

Though a lot depends on whom is available and heck even what our defensive scheme is. I believe Hafley played a lot of Seahawks Cover 3 while with the 49ers, so that's what I've been assuming he's bringing here.

What is the absolute best way to learn a subject absent living it.

Teach it.

More accurately, go through the process of preparing to teach it.

An aversion to mocks is very understandable from the perspective of the consumer.

As a producer, at least privately, I have found that the most valuable part of the exercise is getting a better appreciation of a cost benefit analysis as regards trade up, trade down, etc.

This year my personal perspective has to do with lost opportunity cost in the 2nd and possibly 3rd round with a trade up in the 1st. We shall see.

At least from a position of a fellow consumer of the publicly available knowledge, i believe I am armed with an enhanced appreciation of why they do what they do. Concurrently, it also makes me more emotional when they do not do what I think they should, and it makes the day go.

My defense is that at least I took the trouble to investigate the draft class in the context of the realistic options, not only in that particular pick, but in those subsequent picks as regards all the factors we all know about.

I was answering questions my team had, I was helping them with their coding issues and went WTF, why can I help others but struggle coding for my damn self? Point of this rambling story here is I was weeks from quitting college and suddenly by "teaching" how to develop software to my team I realized ... I can do this. It sounds corny, but being "forced" to teach really changed my life.
