I agree with what you're saying about what was actually written, but I believe (totally guessing) the writer's poorly written point was that they started with the old scheme, and then later added the new coordinates new changes or adjustments to that old scheme.
Because while it was the coordinators changes, it's still the DB coaches job to coach the DBs and the coordinator is calling him the star. So maybe it was the Coordinator idea, but he taught the new coaches the old scheme, and the old players, the new changes.
Basically taking a conservative Fangio scheme and turning into an aggressive Vic Fangio scheme, which might be exactly what LaFleur is looking for.
