Maybe the final Sunday statements by Charles and Al.. (BTW.. Al's picture is right next to this portion of the post. 😉 ) ... had a impact on MM decision to clear the entire staff.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/01/tuesday-thoughts-coaching-changes/

On a personal note, the Packers terminated the contracts of some friends I worked with and next to my office was adjacent to the defensive staffs offices for several years. These were the same coaches who helped steer the team to 14 wins and an overtime away from the Super Bowl last season. These are some good coaches and solid people such as Lionel Washington, who arrived in Green Bay at the same time I did in1999, and helped develop and nurture Pro Bowlers Al Harris, Nick Collins and Charles Woodson. I have already received calls from teams asking for references on Lionel and a couple other of these men.

Some of the Packers players wanted more aggressive schemes and more input in the game plan. Coaches should not let players coach, although the way coaches manage their input which happens on every team in the league says a lot. Tactful deference to players interests, without caving in to their demands, is integral to team dynamics.

Maybe there is more to this, per JSOnline:

Not only did McCarthy rail behind closed doors against the plethora of wide-open receivers, soft run defense, lack of physical play and a slew of fourth-quarter folds, he undoubtedly was aware of unrest among the defensive coaches that started early in the season.

According to one source, Sanders and Nunn stood united in support of the scheme whereas the other coaches to various degrees advocated change.

"Sanders and Nunn wanted to do it the Bates way, that it was tried and true," the source said. "But there was another camp within the staff headed by Moss that didn't like the scheme Sanders was using. There was a lot of bitching and griping.

"They caught themselves and didn't let it continue. But the job is hard enough. It's even harder if you have to get the assistants on the same page each week."

Perhaps it wasn't just the players wanting to mix things up, but some of the coaches too; and just for the sake of the team all those involved dropped the issue when Sanders stood firm?

Perhaps Moss was someone responding to the players' suggestions?

The only odd thing is that so many position coaches would be let go. Some of them must of been on Moss' side, I mean Lionel Washington no doubt had good terms with the DBs, namely Al and Charles, but he should've been on good terms with Moss too (assuming Moss is the next DC) and they had a history back from when they both played for the LA Raiders.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of this whole situation. It's stranger and stranger trying to comprehend when you think about it more and more.

It like most of his reads.. was very worthwhile.. that site kicks the crap out of most "football" sites out there... they are becoming more popular with me than PFTalk.. or any of the other major sites out there..

I've been saying that for awhile now so I hope it's true. I really think it is. I have little doubt that it was Bob Sanders' defense. Winston Moss is way to different of a coach than the more laid back Bob Sanders. I think it makes sense and based on some reports I think Winston Moss is the next defensive coordinator. I think Mike McCarthy is just waiting for Moss to hear from St. Louis.

A good coach is willing to listen to his players. I don't mean that they have to do everything the players want, but take their input and at least see if it may help. I mean, it was OBVIOUS that what was being done didn't work, so why NOT try other things.

I'd be a little surprised if he was relying on St. Louis not hiring Moss in order to have the DC he wants, but I guess it's possible.

Am I the only one that thinks there's no chance in hell that Moss gets hire as the HC in St. Louis?

Nah, I heard that he didn't get a 2nd interview offer. I would say slightly above a chance in hell, since they DID interview him.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress

dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
