Aaron Jones contract details: Packers add another void year to maximize cap savings
https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2023/02/17/aaron-jones-packers-contract-details-structure-cap-hit-savings-void-dead/
The Green Bay Packers added another void year to Aaron Jones’ restructured contract to maximize the savings on the salary cap in 2023.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel confirmed the addition of a void year in 2027, meaning Jones’ deal now has void years in 2025, 2026 and 2027. The contract is for five total years – the maximum allowed for bonus proration – but voids following the 2024 season.

Per Ken Ingalls, the restructure slashed $5 million off Jones’ salary in 2023 and will end up saving the Packers $11.816 million on the salary cap this year.

Ingalls has all the details, including the year-by-year structure, on the new deal here:

Jones’ cap hit will be a little under $8.2 million in 2023, down from a little over $20 million originally. His cap hit goes up to $17.7 million in 2024 and will leave behind $6.6 million in dead cap when it voids in 2025. Altogether, it’s a two-year deal worth $32.5 million in cap room spread out over three years.

Adding the third void year in 2027 allowed the Packers to spread out $8.52 million of new signing bonus (roster bonus and base salary conversion) over five years. So while Jones will pocket the signing bonus money up front, the Packers will only count $1.7 million ($8.52 million divided by five years) on the cap in 2023. The team also slashed $5 million from his base salary to add additional savings on the cap and cash paid this year.

Overall, the Packers will pay Jones $23 million over the next two years.

Jones’ original deal (four years, $48 million) was signed in 2021. The Packers have restructured it twice (2022, 2023) in an effort to push money into the future and save money on the cap now.

In terms of cap space following the restructure, the Packers are now $4.7 million over the cap in 2023, per Over the Cap.

In 2024, the Packers could convert more of Jones’ base salary into a signing bonus to lower his cap hit but would add more money to the dead cap hit when the deal voids in 2025.

While I am glad they saved the cap space, my reaction is just as it was after the last deal.  It is still way too expensive for a RB when we have so many other holes to fill, particularly on the offensive line...and then there are the fumbles in big games.

It seems to me the top teams no longer spend top money on RBs. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FpLnSyJXwAMZW48?format=jpg&name=small

When I look at the two offensive lines in the Super Bowl, our guys by comparison are not even close.  When is the last time you saw a push from the offensive line on 3rd or 4th down by our guys like the Eagles have.

We do not seem to learn from mistakes.

FWIW, to me the deal is signal to Rodgers that, "we are bringing your guys back."
Go Packers!!!!

I agree that you normally don't pay RB, but I also think there are exceptions to that and Jones is my mind is an exception.

Without looking it up (so I could be mistaken) I believe he was #2 RBs in yards after contact and #1 of the starters. Jones was MVP of the offense and I think one of the few getting more yards post contact than before, as the OL run blocking sucked.

And the Packers are investing in OL, it's just that whom they're selecting have sucked compared to at least one guy picked after them.

Two of the Chiefs starting IOL were picked after Myers or Newman, they made better picks. Bears have even been out picking us with later picks to get some decent OTs considering they were picked extremely late in the draft.

While I do love the Tom selection, the Packers absolutely need better scouting on the OL.

They selected Myers over Chiefs Creed was a major error, Creed has basically been all pro since Day one and he was the most hyped Center in the draft, and we decided to out smart the hype and do our own thing and they were wrong.

The Packers have been putting the resources into OL, it's just their selections have been bad... that or the coaching, but I think it's the selections.

PFF graded Myers as the 31st best Center last year. Reminder, there are 32 teams...

Myers was 8th best in pass blocking (C Corey Linsley was #1) but Myers was #43 (of the 50 graded) in run blocking.

The Super Bowl Centers were #1 and #2 in run blocking AND both top 4 in pass blocking... and we picked C Myers over C Creed and OG Caleb Schlauderaff over Jason Kelce.

Most the Packers recent OL selections have sucked.

All I'm saying is they need to improve scouting there.

Plus we drafted Jenkins and that was a grand slam as far as I'm concerned.

Runyan was a good pick for being so late, but if he doesn't keep stepping his game up, he needs to be a backup.

I think I confused yards average with yards after contact, or the last time I saw his yards after contact was before his injury. But still Jones has done well.

=============

Of RBs with at least 99 carries, Jones is tried for 4th in yards per carry. And he's first of RBs with at least 130 carries. Also interesting so many in the NFC North.

Bears RB Khalil Herbert 129 carries for 732 yards, 5.7 yards per carry.

Lions RB D'Andre Swift 99 carries for 542 yards, 5.5 y/c.Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins 105 carries for 582 yards, 5.5 y/c.

Bills RB James Cook 106 carries for 560 yards, 5.3 y/c
Packers RB Aaron Jones 214 carries for 1,125 yards, 5.3 y/c  Overall grades from PFF on RB Aaron Jones

Of RBs with at least 50 snaps, PFF has RB Aaron Jones asOverall Grade: 7th RB,
Running Grade: Tied 2nd (tied with
Nick Chubb)
Forced Missed Tackles: 7th
Fumble: 3rd last... as he lost 5 fumbles and the top last year was 6.

Note: If PFF had a forced missed tackle per carry snap, Jones would probably do great, as most of the guys that have forced as many missed tackles as him, have more than 50 more snaps than Jones.

=====================

Of RBs will at least 100 carries, PFF has Aaron Jones as 11th in yards after contact with 3.2 yards after contact.

Of everyone
Aaron Jones has
8th most 10+ yards runs
12th most 15+ yards runs
Only 15th in break away yards, and his breakaway yardage is less than 25%... and 3rd lowest of those in the top 10 yardage, so he's not getting free long runs as some of them and breaking off a huge chunk with speed.

Jones' PFF receiving grade seems average, despite being 8th most catches and 11th most yardage and supposively being in a three way tie for most drops (but I remember a lost of passes to Jones being out of reach).

And Jones blocking grades (both run and pass) are not great, but he's kinda small.

There is an old phase, one in the hand is worth two in the bush.

You can release the one in the hand... and go after the two in the bush, but then you might get two, you might get one, or you might get none.
