An internal investigation has cleared three Houston police officers of assaulting the father of a Green Bay Packers football player during a traffic stop last month.
"An extensive Internal Affairs Division investigation, including independent eyewitness statements and a review of hospital medical records, has concluded there is no evidence to substantiate allegations made by Mr. Marvin Driver Jr. that he was assaulted following his arrest during a traffic stop about 1:30 a.m. on November 17," the Houston Police Department stated in a news release today.
The decision means that Officers Gilberto Cruz, Bacilio Guzman and Matthew Marin, who have been on administrative duties since Nov. 20, will return to their regular patrol assignments immediately, the release states.
Police said Driver, father of Packers receiver Donald Driver, was arrested at his family home in the 8300 block of Gibbons because of outstanding warrants.
When police took him to the Southeast Jail on Mykawa, a doctor there found that he was unresponsive and told police to call for paramedics, according to a police statement.
The elder Driver told relatives that the officers hit, choked and kneed him.
