The tradeoff for cap savings now: If Aaron Rodgers retires or the #Packers move on after the 2023 season, they would have a $68.205 million dead cap hit on the books in 2024.

Wow, this could be horrible for Packers.

Tentative analysis.

The Green Bay Packers have signed QB Aaron Rodgers to a contract extension. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Tuesday.

"We are very pleased to be able to come to an agreement with Aaron that keeps him in Green Bay," said Gutekunst. "His play on the field and leadership in our locker room remain vital in our pursuit of another Super Bowl title. The agreement also allows us to maintain and enhance what we feel is already a very competitive roster."

Rodgers led the league for the fourth time in his career with a passer rating of 111.9 in 2021, joining Steve Young (six times), Roger Staubach (four) and Ken Anderson (four) as the only players to lead the NFL in rating at least four times since 1970. He threw for 37 touchdowns, marking his eighth regular season with at least 30 TD passes, the fifth most in NFL history (Tom Brady, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, nine / Drew Brees, 10). Rodgers also set the NFL mark for the most games with multiple TD passes/zero INTs (13) in a single season in 2021. He has 24 games with multiple TD passes/zero INTs since 2020, topping Brady (19 in 2010-11) for the most over a two-season span in NFL history.

Rodgers was named NFL Most Valuable Player by The Associated Press and by the Pro Football Writers of America for the 2021 season. He became the fifth player in NFL history to win consecutive MVPs and ranks No. 2 with four AP MVP awards (2011, 2014, 2020, 2021), trailing only Manning's five. It was Rodgers' fourth overall PFWA MVP award (2011, 2014, 2020, 2021), tying him with Manning for the most in the history of the PFWA. Last season, Rodgers also earned All-Pro honors from the AP for the fifth time (first team in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021, second team in 2012) and was selected to the Pro Bowl for the 10th time in his career (2009, 2011-12, 2014-16, 2018-21), passing Favre and T Forrest Gregg for the most Pro Bowl selections by a Packer.

With Rodgers as the starting quarterback over the past 14 years, the Packers have made the playoffs 11 times, won the division eight times and won the Super Bowl once. Rodgers helped Green Bay become the first team in NFL history to win 13-plus regular-season games in three straight seasons (2019-21). Rodgers has 449 career passing TDs, passing Favre (442) in Week 16 of 2021 for the most in team history. His 449 TD passes as a Packer are the third most in NFL history by a QB with a single franchise (Brady, 541 with New England; Brees, 491 with New Orleans) and the fifth-most overall in league history.

Shameful, pathetic and embarrassing.

Pelissero noted that Rodgers' new contract includes an obscenely large dead cap hit if Rodgers retires or the Packers get rid of him after the 2023 season.

People lost their minds when his 2013 contract was revealed. $22 million a year average. Today those numbers are given out all the time. 26 players are looking at an average of $22 mil or more. 16 of them are QBs.

For years The Packers were known as a draft and develope team.
That all changed 3 years ago when Gute went all in picking up The Smith's, Amos and Turner.

I think they thought the Rodgers window was closing.

What they didn't see coming was a Salary Cap that barely moved the last 2 years.
What they didn't see was Aaron Rodgers having 3 great years , including back to back MVP seasons.

Now they are being forced push money into future years to keep the window open 2-3 years.
Silver lining is The Salary Cap should be making huge jumps the next 3 years which will help when all this void year money comes due.
I really hope The Packers get Davonte signed to a 3-4 year contract that will reduce his 19mil Cap hit in 2022.

THE MOST IMPORTANT GUY IN ANY ORGANIZATION IS THE GUY WHO KNOWS HOW TO WORK THE SALARY CAP!

dfosterf (26-Jun) : I think it would be great to have someone like Tom Grossi or Andy Herman on the Board of Directors so he/they could inform us
dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.
    wpr (26-Jun) : 1st world owners/stockholders problems dfosterf.
Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (25-Jun) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy is on my ballot subject to me penciling him in as a no.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : I thought it used to be we voted for the whatever they called the 45, and then they voted for the seven, and then they voted for Mark Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
Zero2Cool (25-Jun) : Maybe wicked wind chill made it worse?
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : And then he signs with Cleveland in the offseason

    Zero2Cool (19-Jun) : According to Tweeter

    dfosterf (18-Jun) : FAFO
Zero2Cool (18-Jun) : one year $4m with incentives to make it up to $6m
    dfosterf (18-Jun) : Or Lions
dfosterf (18-Jun) : Beats the hell out of a Vikings signing
Zero2Cool (18-Jun) : Baltimore Ravens now have signed former Packers CB Jaire Alexander.
dfosterf (14-Jun) : TWO magnificent strikes for touchdowns. Lose the pennstate semigeezer non nfl backup
dfosterf (14-Jun) : There was minicamp Thursday. My man Taylor Engersma threw
dfosterf (11-Jun) : There will be a mini camp practice Thursday.
    Zero2Cool (11-Jun) : He's been sporting a ring for a while now. It's probably Madonna.
Martha Careful (10-Jun) : We only do the tea before whoopee, it relaxes me.
    wpr (10-Jun) : That's awesome Martha.

Martha Careful (10-Jun) : Turns out he like older women
Martha Careful (10-Jun) : I wasn't supposed to say anything, but yes the word is out and we are happy 😂😂😂

Mucky Tundra (10-Jun) : Well he can always ask his brother for pointers
Zero2Cool (10-Jun) : Bo Melton taking some reps at CB as well as WR
Zero2Cool (10-Jun) : key transactions coming today at 3pm that will consume more cap in 2025
Zero2Cool (9-Jun) : Jaire played in just 34 of a possible 68 games since the start of the 2021 season
Zero2Cool (9-Jun) : reported, but not expected to practice
Zero2Cool (9-Jun) : Jenkins has REPORTED for mandatory camp
    Zero2Cool (9-Jun) : I really thought he'd play for Packers.
buckeyepackfan (9-Jun) : Packers releasing Jaire Alexander.
