We’re expected to sign Funchess. This excites me. At 6’4”, he provides a big body on the perimeter for Rodgers. He’s also proven that he can be successful in the league. Missed last year with collarbone injury.

Only 25 years of age and already a sixth-year veteran. That's pretty impressive.

Difficult to see how WR Devin Funchess fills need for Packers

Receivers starting flying off the shelves in free agency, so the Green Bay Packers did some panic shopping Tuesday.

The team agreed to terms with free agent receiver Devin Funchess.

It’s difficult to see how Funchess fills a need in Green Bay, even for the receiver-needy Packers. He has good size (6-4, 225), but the Packers depth chart at receiver is already littered with big bodies. He’s not measurably fast or athletic. He has struggled to separate from man-to-man coverage and catch the football throughout his NFL career. True consistency for Funchess has remained elusive.

Between 2015 and 2018, only two receivers in the NFL with more than 300 total targets caught a lower percentage of those targets than the 51.8 percent Funchess caught with the Carolina Panthers.

Not surprisingly, the Panthers moved on after his rookie contract expired. The Indianapolis Colts did the same after Funchess broke his collarbone in Week 1 and missed the rest of the 2019 season.

The Packers are taking a low-risk flier on a veteran who played in one game last season. Best case scenario, he emerges as a legit contributor for the Packers passing offense. Worst case, he’s a bust and he’s cut during camp. As is often the case, he’ll probably wind up somewhere in between. And as long as his addition doesn’t impact what the Packers are planning to do in the draft, there should be no long-term consequences of signing him, even if he’s no good come August.

It’s just an underwhelming signing. To be fair, the free-agent class of pass-catchers was nothing if not underwhelming. The Packers decided against paying good money in the receiver and tight end market and settled on a former second-round pick at little cost to add to the competition. To that end, it’s hard to argue against the thinking.

But now the Packers must nail the draft, both at receiver and likely at tight end. GM Brian Gutekunst must find a complementary piece (or two?) for Davante Adams and Allen Lazard, who are still the two best receivers on the roster. The offense needs a quick playmaker capable of getting open on his own. And possibly even a legit vertical threat if Marquez Valdes-Scantling can’t rebound.

Funchess is a known name, but his first five seasons suggest he’s a middling talent who won’t drastically the team’s biggest need on offense. The Packers need to do more at receiver. They likely will.

He certainly can’t be any worse than Allison, MVS, or Kumerow. Instant upgrade simply because our receiving group sucks.

I really like the way Gute went about FA this year. After spending big last year he goes for low cost, high reward signings this year and gives the team the flexibility to pick how they want in the draft.

Price determines if this is a good or bad risk... but I disagree with the article that this was a panic move,as often when the FA system gets backed up when the highest rated player left takes their time to choose and the market is waiting for one domino to fall and then many follow.

Teams seemed to be waiting for Robby Anderson to make a selection, and once he did, teams moved to their next option quickly.

Team likes big WRs, for the physical play, high pointing and blocking. He has the potential to be a very good #2 which is what we need,at least until the rookie we select in the draft get up to speed ... of course that might be harder for rookies this year if there is less training camp for some reason as some are speculating.

I don't know how this could ever be called a panic move. If the draft had absolutely zero depth at WR, and the Packers gave a talent like Funchess $18 million per year ... MAYBE then it could be spoken in the same breathe as "panic".

I don't like how slow this guy is. That said, he's another huge target and hopefully the Packers make something out of him. I think the guy challenges Allen Lazard immediately for WR2.

A good low cost move, I wonder if he'll strictly play WR or if he'll play some move TE like in college.

Zero2Cool (3h) : NFL thought it would get more attention week preceding Super Bowl.
Zero2Cool (3h) : Yes, the Pro Bowl. It was played Sunday before Super Bowl from 2010-2022
packerfanoutwest (3h) : pro bowl
Zero2Cool (3h) : From 2010 to 2022, it was played on the Sunday before the Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (3h) : They moved it to the BYE week before Super Bowl several years ago.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : it was always after the SB.....

beast (12h) : I thought the pro game was before the Super Bowl?
packerfanoutwest (13h) : ok now for the Pro Bowl Game in Hawaii
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : If I was Philly I would try to end it instead of punting it
Mucky Tundra (14h) : VICTORY! We have (moral) victory!
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : Hey they mentioned that we 3-peted
Mucky Tundra (14h) : seems to me the 49ers should have traded Aiyuk when they had the chance
Mucky Tundra (14h) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (15h) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (15h) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (15h) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (15h) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (15h) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (15h) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (15h) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (15h) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (15h) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (15h) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (15h) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (15h) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (15h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (15h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (16h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (16h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (16h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (16h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (16h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (16h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (16h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (16h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (16h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (16h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (16h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (16h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
