I don't know about the 3rd one, but I thought first two showed being able to add something that others haven't last game.

1) TE Jace Sternberger
2) S Ibraheim Campbell
3) LB Rashan Gary

Sternberger looked like he might be the Packers best H-back option, and LaFleur (like his mentor Shannan likes to use H-backs).

Campbell looked like he was our clearly best coverage LB / physical S option since S Greene went down.

While Gary has great potential, I'm not sure if they going to be resting the Smiths more or finding ways to get him on the field more.

My thought for a 3rd is at WR... either Lazard or MVS... Lazard because he's getting more snaps, and has shown very good body control with hands. MVS because LaFleur talked about using him differently once he got healthy again, which made me think using him as a 3rd WR speed option, as the Falcons Super Bowl team used Taylor Gabriel... which either got him one on ones or helped open up others.

I don't see Gary as being important for the final 6 games. He's somewhat of a luxury pick that they are willing to groom for the future. His limited playing time sort of proves that they are not in a rush to get him on the field for any significant amount of plays.

Teams with our talent level can't afford to draft non-starters in the first round.

IMO, his limited playing time more than likely proves that he is not capable of playing at this level (at this point) and may not ever be...just like Jackson and Burks.

GBG gasped:

Which smith should we take off the field to give him more playing time?

A. Either - rotating him in to give one of them the a few plays off earlier in the game keeps them fresher for the 4th quarter.

B. Neither - you can move D Smith inside, which is what happens when Gary does play.

Sorry, I'm just not buying that the Number 12 overall shouldn't be playing more.

WPR wondered:

Exactly how many 1st round players start in this league?

I believe all of them, up to Gary, start or have seen the majority of playing time, other than Williams, who had surgery:
Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray, QB Oklahoma
San Francisco 49ers: Nick Bosa, EDGE Ohio State
New York Jets: Quinnen Williams, DT Alabama
Oakland Raiders: Clelin Ferrell, EDGE Clemson
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Devin White, LB LSU
New York Giants: Daniel Jones, QB Duke
Jacksonville Jaguars: Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky
Detroit Lions: T.J. Hockenson, TE Iowa
Buffalo Bills: Ed Oliver, DL Houston
Pittsburgh Steelers (via trade with Broncos): Devin Bush, LB Michigan
Cincinnati Bengals: Jonah Williams, OL Alabama (out surgery)

hardly an suitable comparison

One plays a position which can easily be rotated in, and often is.

The other, sans The 1970 Dallas Cowboys, is never rotated.

By the way, I’m still waiting for Burks and Jackson to see meaningful action in the field. They were developmental projects as well

And actually it's kind of shocked me this year, how little the two Smiths are rotating out, they're staying in that at a higher percentage than I would have expected... and Gary, isn't doing some of the coverage stuff that Fackrell and Preston get asked to do. But year he could rotate in as the large edge pass rusher role.

I wasn't really a fan of the Burks selection from the start... (great athlete for his size, but he always looked less physically than some Safeties to me).

And Jackson was a boom or bust gamble... which right now looks like he's gonna bust, at least with man coverage.... he wasn't that experienced and all of his experience was in zone. I was surprised a man coverage team took that gamble so high.

Then again, Gary also one of those boom or bust great athletes.

In defense of Gary of all the teams that drafted ahead of the Packers last year there are only 1 or 2 of them that will make the playoffs (49ers, Bills). Its easier to give your rooks playing time when you're not in win now mode like the Packers are.

Also the Smiths + Fackrell are legit vet pass rushers, expecting a rook to take snaps from them this early might be a bit premature.

I do agree with Burks being a (failed) project and to a degree Jackson as well, although I'd consider Jackson more of a boom/bust value pick considering how much hype he had as a 1st round talent.

beast (9h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (9h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (19h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (19h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (21h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
