I'd like to read what members feel are GB's greatest needs and why.

I think the top needs this offseason are Edge and Safety because really we need two starters at each. Yes the Packers have Perry, Fackrell, Tramon, Brice and Jones signed for next year... but Perry is always injured it seems, Fackrell and Tramon are in their last year of their contracts... and Fackrell stats are better than his play, so he might get well over paid, while Tramon is 36, so they might not be resigned, and does anyone trust Brice and Jones to be starters at Safety right now? ... I don't... I might trust Jones to be a starter at the dime LB spot. But Matthews and Wilkerson both being FAs hurts the Packers and the coverage guys are so important in Pettine's system, as he would like to be able to get them in man coverage and then he can scheme pressure in the front with physical players.

After that OLand DL.
OL probably the most because there is a big whole at RG and because Bulaga gets injured and is in the last year of his deal.... but DL is a need, because Wilkerson is a FA, and Daniels and Lowry are in the last years of their deals, though Lancaster stepping up at a two gap run puller has given them some depth and they'll probably resign one of the DL at least. But the Packers DL has better depth and usually not as injury prone at Bulaga, so I'm gonna go with OL first.

After that it's a bit of an open field...

But I'm gonna go with CB, because Pettine system the coverage guys are so important and CB King can't stay healthy. Jackson was improving but he might not be ready to start yet... so they need another potential starter since Breeland is a FA.

RB/TE ... RB because LaFleur offenses usually has a power guy and a speed guy, which helps if both are receivers, but it seems like often a RB gets injured. I don't feel TE is as much a need as others, because I think Graham is better than what he showed last year, Graham's worst seasons have all been the first year with a new team, and based on what some former Packers TEs have said, I don't think Mike McCarthy offense was set up well for TEs... and because Gute has some interesting developmental receiving TEs in Robert Tonyan and Allen Lazard who were both 6'5" 230lb WRs in college (I'm projecting they're going to ask Lazard to switch to TE like Tonyan). They still might need a blocker though. But RB gets the edge because I think the RB is such a focal point in LaFleur offense to take pressure off the QB.

WR .... I used to have this higher, when thinking they were going to be using a ton of 3 WRs, but I seeing the receiving TEs, I've come back off this a good bit, plus the WRs will be getting to learn an offense that will help them more, and they'll be able to learn and grow with the vets. Plus Allison and Kumerow with all the rookies from last year and Adams. Though I also wouldn't be shocked if Gute drafts a WR high if there is some guy he loves.

ILB ... Ryan is FA, Martinez is going into a contract year... and Burks is developing. But they'll probably resign Martinez, I think they should resign Ryan on a short term prove it deal (but I really think as a physical LB Ryan could fit well going forward in Pettines defense)... and they can also use physical Safeties at ILB in the dime package (Josh Jones).

QB ... Rodgers... also if Kizer has gotten comfortable with his footwork, and looking like his rookie self, then I think they'll have something good to work with, plus a developmental guy in Boyle showed some unteachable stuff, his biggest problems are consider teachable so some potential there.

So at the moment, my need list order looks something like
    Top Needs
  1. S (really 1A)
  2. Edge (really 1B)
  3. OL
  4. DL

  5. Lower Needs
  6. CB
  7. RB (really 6A)
  8. TE (really 6B)
  9. WR
  10. ILB
  11. QB

Beast is largely spot on...as usual. I think I would slightly re prioritize:
• RG
  • Edge
  • ILB
  • RB/TE
  • QB
• I have been (perhaps overly) strident on the right guard. Ir they are above average there, the offense should kick ass. I know this is blasphemous, but I am eager to see some new coaching blood improves our run offensive blocking.Edge has been discussed at length. I am assuming CMIII gone or a very very team friendly contract. I am higher on Perry than most of the posters, but I am less impressed with the long-term upside of Gilbert and Fackrelll, so we need help, no doubt. I just want whoever is out there to friggin keep contain, which other than Perry and Fackrell later this year, we haven't done in 5 years.ILB - sorry gang, I love Martinez effort, but I think he is just above average, and I don't think Ryan is the answer. Burks has alot to prove....we need help here.

RB-We need another guy in the backfield. Williams, for a kid, was SPECTACULAR in blitz pick up and effective enough running. Jones should be our White (NE) kind of guy, lots of dump offs, draws with occasional regular runs. Guys get hurt.

TE. I am disappointed we are keeping Graham. I want to keep Kendricks, Tonyan shows enough promise, but we need a younger big fast dude. If the Graham call is correct, expect a 3rd or fourth round selection here.

QB - If Jones of Duke fall to late first round, I want him. He has tons of upside IMO. Luck like.

If you're just looking at Martinez movement skills, I agree he is average, but if he can his hands on you, his tackling skills are very good, which takes his average movement and makes him above average. And I don't feel they need a great ILB in this system... though a guy better in coverage could help, but if the Safeties are deep enough they can use a physical Safety there as they have with Burnett, Richardson, Whitehead, Jones over the years as a dime LB, which is why I have it lower on my list.

From what I read in this and other threads, an Edge Rusher seems to be the current leading priority need for the Packers. That does not mean that one will get picked by GB with the 12th draft pick. A more valuable athlete may be on the board to fill the S or OT positions that is just too good to not take.

All that I know right now is that GB's 2019 NFL Draft is going to be real interesting. In addition, Nashville will be a real change from past draft host cities. Should be a real show ! 😁

Sorry, I thought implicit in the nature of question of the thread was where we would spend big FA $$$ or high draft choices. I think Williams, Jones, and Jackson can be better safeties than Martinez, Ryan and Burks are LB's

There are so many available guys who could be plugged in there, I think its a relatively easy to fill. Does it need to be filled, sure...kind of like a long snapper. But from a dollar or draft choice perspective, not a priority.

Comparing them to long snappers is just insulting and disrespectful....

Jackson hasn't played Safety (at least not yet).

I was just asking a question, that wasn't reprimanding.

I know you weren't, but I get tired of folks just saying "Beast said" or "KRK said"...just trying to add some humor.

    Beast issued the following interrogatory:

So you think Safety is relatively easy to fill, but RG is so relatively hard that it needs a 1st round pick be used on it? Confused

Interesting you have drawn those two positions into comparison. I may be misrepresenting your position (sorryif I am), but I think other than a "can't miss" all-pro type, you would not use a 1 or high 2 on an OG. Similarly, I wouldn't dream of using a one or two on a safety. Ergo, IMO, not a high priority

Since Lang left, we have yet to successfully fill the position, so it can't be that easy to fill. In my estimation, safety is. However, comparing it to long-snapper was a bridge too far.😊

True on the Lang comment, but other than some one year aging vets, a draft pick that didn't show up and some UDFAs they haven't really even tried to replace Lang in the last two years, have they?... meanwhile they've used vets, 1st and 2nd rounds picks and UDFA at Safety and still haven't been able to replace Nick Collins in the last seven years.

That's my general stance at OG, though usually I just say 1st round pick... and if they're an OT, that changes things... and it's possible they could draft an OT to play RG this year and replace Bulaga next year (like Spriggs but hopefully more successful).

Also my stance used to be I wouldn't draft a Safety in the first round either (and one of the reason I didn't really want them to draft Haha, though I had lessened up on that some), but with the NFL becoming more and more AND MORE pass happy, you need coverage guys even more including at FS (and as Pettine pointed out, both Safeties need to be able to play some FS in the modern day NFL). So I'll certainly draft an athletic FS in the 1st round now... SS is like OG, they would have to be a "can't miss" guy, though we did have one of those just last year in SS Derwin James, but I thought James was a top 10 pick player.

But good quality FS are certainly hard to find, especially in the modern day, as the college spread offenses have been keeping all of them at CB, so less quality is moving to FS... and the spread offenses are said to be SO MUCH easier to read for Safeties that they don't learn all the finer details that you have to learn going against Pro-Style offenses (though the NFL is slowly going to spread too).

Though I'm expecting Gute to go after FS Earl Thomas... though I think Thomas going to Dallas is all but a lock, unless someone outbids Dallas, as Thomas' childhood team is the Cowboys and Texas is his home, they need a FS, and they have his former coach, and Jerry Jones loves a big name hyped player.... if I'm correct about that, it will be interesting to see if he goes after another one or not... like Adrian Amos Jr., or Landon Collins.

OT/FS : So in a normal year I don't mind a good OT or FS in the 1st... though I've been disappointed when watching film of the OTs that are projected in the 1st this year... I'm not sure if OT Jonah Williams is athletic enough for NFL OT in a pass heavy scheme... and OT Greg Little is bigger and more athletic but might be lacking the mean streak and assertive physical style one might look for.

OG/SS : Yeah they have to be "can't miss" guys for me to want them in the 1st... though with more passing, more coverage is needed... especially as the spread comes trying to get DBs in favorable one on ones.
